thiscantbesoy asked me an interesting question regarding how one orders eggs. She likes her eggs with the yolk cooked through and she said she had heard that when ordering them in a restaurant, one should say 'over hard' when giving the server details.
She said it sounded funny and was convinced that the server at IHOP might look at her like she was crazy.

I did a bit of research regarding diner slang and 'over hard' is the acceptable term.

While perusing other terms I came across something rather fascinating.
The term to 'eighty-six' someone is a reference to the state of New York's liquor laws.

Article 86 of the New York State Liquor Code
defines the circumstances in which a bar patron should be refused alcohol or '86ed'.

Yet there are a couple of other theories as to where it came from

The Soup Kitchen Theory
during the depression of the 1930s, soup kitchens would often make just enough soup for 85 people. If you were next in line after number 85, you were '86ed'.

The Eight Feet By Six Feet Theory
A coffin is usually eight feet long and is buried six feet under. Once in your coffin you've been 'eight by sixed', which shortens to '86ed'.

It seems like this is a term that came about in the twentieth century.

Right now I am baking an angel food cake, making a chicken stock and doing a few loads of laundry.
