in the cupboards

Last night it was French Onion soup. I really love making that. I abhorred all onion-related products as a child. It was almost pathological at times. I would run screaming from the room on occasion when I saw the things. They hurt to eat (being spicy) and I sometimes thought my parents were intentionally trying to harm me by putting it in food. (My Mother is probably laughing at this part) When I was a kid I had a friend and her Mother was a wonderful chef. I used to love eating at her house and one day her Mom made French Onion soup. I was so horrified and I wanted to be such a good sport. I liked the crusty cheesy topping and I had some of the broth but the onions? That was too much. I just could not hack it. I felt like crying about it. Eventually I got over my hang-ups about onions.
Well mostly.
I still don't like raw onions. Some of my family love raw onions. In particular they like sandwiches with raw onion and peanut butter. (Ernest Hemingway was fond of this combination as well) They are most well-received late at night for some reason. I being a kind person would make these for those that liked them. I prefer peanut butter and pickle for my late night sandwich. But that is another conversation.

So we had soup. It was good.

Tonight I am thinking of doing something with salmon. Either wrapping it up in puff pastry or possibly roasting it and serving it with scrambled eggs. Eggs with a bit of chevre, parsley and cream. I also have some tomatoes I ought to put to use. I may save those for tomorrow.

Yesterday I also made muffins.
Today I have reviewed spoons.

Peanut butter and raw onion sandwiches? I do believe I will pass. Peanut butter and pickle (or banana) sandwiches? I grew up eating and will gladly accept.

I love french onion soup. It's one of those things I tend to order whenever I find it on the menu (much like crab cakes), sort of as a ruler of how good a place is. My grandmother used to make it and I have no idea what she used/did, but I've never found any that quite compared.

I very rarely can handle the intensity of raw onions (no matter the variety), but will ingest essentially anything that includes some form of cooked. The smell of onions caramelizing is among my absolute favorite.

It is an acquired taste.
I need to get some dill pickles so I can make myself some quality peanut butter and pickle sammiches.

There are some places that make french onion soup seem like love. Maximillian's in the market makes a good French Onion soup. Oh so tasty. Mmmm tastiness.

I think the scent of caramelizing onions is dandy because there is a sweetness brought out.

What is your recipe? My husband loves French Onion soup, but there are so many different recipes out there that I have yet to try one!

[identity profile] gfrancie.livejournal.com 2007-04-18 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I use the recipe out of Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child. It is pretty simple and cooks the onions down slowly so you get a lot of flavor.

Peanutbutter and pickle for sure.

I miss eating vegetarian French Onion soup, and should get on to making some.

ooh yes yes
I still don't like onions- the texture! I'll pick them out of things still to this day- I never "got over it" like my mom said I would!

I am ok with the flavour.
I also hate celery both texture and flavour.
The worst was that childhood "snack" of ants on a log. Guh. Stabbity hate.

The texture can be off-putting.

I've heard that peanut butter & mustard sandwiches are quite delicious as well. However, I think that I'm gonna just take their word for it, and SKIP IT.

You hated onions? I find that interesting compared with the nickname you have for your son, Senor Not-with-peanut-butter-on-a-sandwich-thank-you....

hee hee

I like irony. A lot.

I thought your husband was British! You should call it British Onion Soup (so that Senor Onion could feel completely included.)

Well some of my family was French so it works for everyone. Senor Onion is a bit of a mutt.
