okay, so on my interest list I once put down, "vern fonk ads" only people who live in Washington state get the joke I think.
Well what makes it interesting today is the fact that I found one other person who listed that as an interest too.
[livejournal.com profile] asabass is the winnner of my "cool person of Tuesday award" I know it is wednesday, but I am always a day behind in life.
So he wins the award yesterday.

For those who somehow live outside the great state of mildew, Vern Fonk insurance is known for their incredibly cheesy/silly ads on late night television.
They take low production values to a new height. Some not seen since the good ol' days of Cal Worthington car ads with his animals.

Well, in continuing television news I watched Queer Eye for the Straight Eye last night, because the fag hag deep within me dictates that it is so. It was a rerun, (because I am always behind) and I was truly amused or diverted (take yer pick) as this very sweet guy transformed himself for his girlfriend who looks like she ought to be working Aurora Ave. Not only does she have the "I bought my entire wardrobe at Wal-Mart for a $1.99" look, she has the personality to match.
Some men just shouldn't try for badly bleached blonde women with the kindness of Atilla the Hun.
One of my favorite quips last night came from the foodie homosexual who said when looking through the fridge, "It seems we have an alcholism theme here..."

....

In books news.
I am not really reading anything new as of late. I am just attempting to finish some Indiana Jones-like novel which is alright, but the sequel was much better.
There are a number of things I have lined up to read, when I get to them...I..oh you know. blah blah.

But there is a really cool new book out. the curious incident of the dog in the night-time
A debut novel about a child with aspergers syndrome who becomes fixated on this dog who dies, his environment and solving a mystery (he is fixated on Sherlock Holmes as well). A number of my co-workers read it and said it is written from the point of view from the child,(in his head) and you are given this incredibly close view of what it is like for him (the author apparently worked with autistic kids at one point) and one co-worker said it was over-welming at times, because you can see how the child experiences sensory overload. It also helped a co-worker understand what it is like for their sibling who has the same problem.

This book Charlie Parker Played Be Bop has been out for awhile and I own a copy as well. It is a really neat kids book about jazz and Charlie Parker. I know, it sounds a bit odd to write a children's book about a junkie musician, but it is so beautifully put together. There are illustrations that are a symphony of colour and light. Thetext was inspired by "Nights in Tunisa". The book has a frenetic raw energy. It is definitely something I would get for any small child. The author Chris Raschka is such a fun children's writer. He written other books about music.
Mysterious Thelonious a small book that jumps all over the place (much like his Monk's music) The color makes me think of the music's movement and makes much of it come alive on the page.
This isn't exactly for the Barney crowd. It is something a little different, never condescending and educates as well.
A final book to tie into this theme of beautiful colors within books and unusual approaches to stories (and heck, even african american culture) is one of my favorite books that I found when working in a children's library.
Tar Beach I like this because it combines a number of different medias. The artist/writer originally made a quilt, which was about her childhood, and history in Harlem. You see a little girl who has daydreams in the middle of this incredibly urban landscape, you see what the adults are honestly facing and a million other tiny details captured with acrylic, paper, and fabric. This is a story for slightly older children, but younger children would appreciate it for the visual quality.

Okay Monday night when I made dinner I was nearly out of flour, which was important in a sense because I was going to make a tortellini filled with chicken and mushrooms. Alas I lacked the flour, but I really didn't want to go out into the heat and buy some. So I thought why not create something else. So I thawed the boneless chicken thighs, and roasted large slices of bell pepper.
Once the chicken was thawed I took the slices of bell pepper and placed them with in the inner part of the chicken. I then sprinkled a bit of dried basil (though I suspect fresh basil would be twice as good) and a dash of salt and pepper. I then wrapped them up and secured them with some soaked short skewers (twenty minutes in water ought to do the trick)
I put a few teaspoons of olive oil in the pan and sauteed the chicken till it was pretty and golden like a california starlet. I turned down the heat to low.
I let them sit in the juices for awhile and basted them occasionally.
I then made a quick pasta dish that had more roasted bell pepper, bacon, and sauteed mushrooms and a bit of tomato paste.
Then I took the chicken when it was fully cooked, carefully removed the skewers, and sliced the chicken.
ta-da medallions all fancy-pancy like. I placed that ontop of the pasta and served it with tomatoes and cucumbers and made strawberry shortcake from scratch for dessert.

Another simple dish that lets you pretend you are Martha Stewart for the evening.

....

Tonight I may make marinated/stuffed porkchops. Let's see what happens in the kitchen when I start making things up.

I am barely moving now. It is too warm to breathe. I may have to go and lie in a cold bath.

The weather is just too Tennessee Williams for my taste. There is way too much of the Beads of sweat running down between breasts action for a Wednesday.

Despite this weather I have done several loads of laundry, vaccumed the apartment, cleaned the kitchen, and begun to prepare dinner.

I also worked on some writing today. Cheer for me.

Cold...bath. Maybe I will put ice cubes into the cold bath. That way I can feel like I am lying in a drink.

I saw Johnny English tonight and I had too many beers.

Yes, it is Wednesday in Gennie land.

DRUNK!

update: I walk into the living room and say, "geez, it is warm." and my boyfriend agrees. I look over at him and suddenly all of his clothes are gone.
What a fuckin' magician.
