We decided to hike from Monterosso to Vernazza. It is not a hike for the weak. You climb up into these hills up these steep steep steps built by peasants who pretty much created vineyards out of nothing on the sides of the foothills. You have to admire their tenacity to make something like that work. People have been farming like this for over a thousand years. Yet in recent years many of the vineyards and rock work was abandoned because people's children did not want to do such manual labor. But people have taken over and it has become this preserved area and kind of a park through-out the Cinque Terre. They have their own brand and they sell all these local products like wine, pesto, olive oil and other things. It is just inspiring because they want people to come and visit and see this incredibly unique way of life and culture and yet keep it going so traditions are not lost. So you pay to use the trails and to help preserve things and people are really reverent of the area.
But back to Mr. Jenner trying to kill me. We hiked through the hills and the first part was just deadly. I said to him, "right now I sorta hate you. I have to make a nasty confession very early in our marriage. I find hiking to be one of the dullest activities out there. A little walk is fine but hiking seems like a cruel punishment."
He took it well.
