accomplishments great and small
Feb. 19th, 2008 11:29 amI am working on an idea for a bread-pudding that has caramelized apples in it. I am figuring out the logistics of it. I think it will be good. It will also use up some bread ends and apples I have.
As for Senor Onion and his general malaise, he is doing much better. It definitely proved to be nasty teething. (canines and molars) We kept offering food at meal times -starting with yogurt and applesauce and worked our way up to barley and leeks from a leftover stew I made Sunday night. He is eating bananas and cheese again and is in a much happier mood. Though I could do without the 5:30am wake-up times. He is also napping again for a significant period during the day. I think he is also getting taller. He can almost reach door knobs and shelves he couldn't reach a couple of weeks ago. I may have to put a brick on his head to slow him down because at the rate we are going I am going to have to tape objects to the ceiling to keep him from getting into things. (though that would be fun. I could potentially recreate that one Fred Astaire dancing upside down scene from Royal Wedding.)
I am trying out a couple of recipes from the Judith Jones book The Tenth Muse. The Butterscotch cookies are delicious. They aren't super butterscotchy (I think I would want more of that flavor myself) but they are still good. I will definitely make those again. They have finely chopped pecans and lots of butter so that would win a lot of people over.
I am finally getting into a book I have had for a long time (nearly two years) and now my brain has the capacity to absorb it. (Pompeii by Robert Harris) I am also reading A Time Of Gifts by Patrick Leigh Fermor about his experience walking across parts of central Europe in the early to mid thirties. He was 18 years old. He had been kicked out of school and he was able to see things/people just before much of it was lost forever. It is the first book of two. (the other I also received for Christmas)
On Sunday when I was shopping I went to Gymboree to find a few things for Senor Onion as they were having a sale. I am a Mummy who refuses to pay full retail for children's clothing as they have a habit of growing out of something three hours after you put it on them. They were having a few attractive items on extra sale. The woman working there was super cheerful. If I didn't know any better I would think she was on something. She would go around to all the people shopping and say, "Are you finding all of your treasures?"
Yes.
Treasures.
I come up to the counter with the clothes I picked out.
"Those are some exquisite treasures you have there."
It was treasures this and treasures that.
These treasures were adorable. And there were some other treasures going on sale soon.
I wasn't clothes shopping. I was hanging out with Indiana Jones or I had entered a Pirate's lair.
I had no idea that cotton clothing for small children were treasures. I am now aware of that.
But hey now Senor Onion has a couple of nice shirts with ocotopi on them. And they are treasures! Adorable ones at that.
