Errands of many kind were taken care of today. Bread was bought and there was also a trip to the British Pantry to pick up items of an Anglo pursuasion.
As it was early enough in the day and not too warm yet I baked a strawberry blueberry cake. For we must have cake.
The rest of the afternoon was given to uncomfortable humidity and by dinner time it was rain and thunderstorms which felt rather good.
It is supposed to be even more cool tomorrow which I am looking forward to. I wilt fast in the heat.
As for further bookish things I am reading The Perfect Summer: England 1911, Just Before the Storm. (A book written by the granddaughter of one Vita Sackville-West) So far it is proving to be rather interesting. It was about this fascinating and for some, an absolutely exciting Summer before many things went to pieces. Everyone seemed to be young and vibrant and what they didn't know is so many would be marching to their graves in a few short years. So with hindsight it has that hint of melancholy. You can see all the horror and tragedy that will lay ahead and all England could see was the coronation, beautiful weather and exciting people.
-Another hilarious story from the book trade.
-Review/short extract of Alan Bennett's new novella 'The Uncommon Reader' which I can't wait to get my hands on. I have great affection for his book, The Clothes They Stood Up In and it sounds like this new book should be just as good.
