This weekend is the county fair in my home town. It seems my family has done pretty darn well for themselves when it comes to entries.

Fanny the goose won best of breed and best in show. (My Mom's pet goose, but my brother Mike entered her.)

My Mother won judge's choice in spinning for cabled merino/silk yarn. She also won judge's choice and best of show in food preservation for dehydrated green onions. Apparently these dehydrated green onions were crazy popular with one judge who kept offering them to people. Then because my Mother can't be stopped; she earned second most points in needlework. The real throw down is that she had most entries in home arts. (what people used to call Home Ec.)
Now she may be a superintendent for the department, but the judges don't know the names of who enters what (that is covered up) so it was all my Mother's kick-ass work that they recognized. I will be curious to see what my Mom will enter for the Puyallup fair. (serious business y'all)

My Mother is also deeply proud of the Home Arts department for a number of reasons. For instance; canning/preservation entries were double what they were last year (200 or so last year and 400 this year) and knitting entries for adults were yooge.
As she put it in her email to me:
"last year there were maybe 5 adult sweaters, this year i think it was something like 25. and not a fucking eyelash garter stitch scarf in sight (but omigawd, the most hideous puke-green shag-rug-looking furry shrug--it's going to give me nightmares. i may have to take pictures of it, it's so awful. i tried it on and a friend told me i looked like a demented muppet)."
(I enjoy my Mother's emails a lot)

This is sort of the bright side of a recession, people get into this stuff again.
