I had my volunteer gig for Senor Onion's preschool. It was amusing and exhausting. Apparently the kids all did speed before class and didn't tell us. During circle time half of the kids making farting noises with their mouth -it added a different element to the song "The More We Get Together". Then it was a whole lot of playing. I helped one girl get a tiara on. Half of the girls spend every single class time in costume. I kind of dig that. How many of us would love to go about our daily lives in costume? One little boy was dressed up as a dinosaur. He did a lot of roaring. I supervised painting and other crafty projects. Plus I seemed to help a gazillion small children to the toilet and with washing their hands. It seemed that along with being wound up everyone decided they all had to go. Several times. Over. "You just went!" "I gotta go again." "...okay."
During snack the kids got all whooped up and began to scream. All together. Imagine 16 kids shrieking. A few were screaming for the others to stop. It was like they were possessed. Who knew that watermelon and veggie booty would cause everyone to have a freak out. Between that and the general running around they wore out all of the adults. People were making comments about how it isn't a bad thing to start drinking around noon. "I...I need a cocktail" I murmured while tidying up tables and a Dad began to giggle wildly. Yeah. They broke us.
I had a fun time. I think I have won the heart of the shy kid in the class. He hardly ever speaks and mostly just nods his head or looks at you with his giant puppy-dog eyes. Then I read Go Dog Go to him and he just started talking a mile a minute to me. I looked at him and thought, "who the heck is this kid?" He told me about flying on a plane, visiting his relatives in Holland, which dog is his favorite and what was going to happen next in the story. He likes to sit next to me at circle time and asked that I help him clean up his hands after snack. Okay so I am smitten. I really like all of the kids. Even the crazy ones. One of the crazier ones came up and kissed me on the shoulder. *snorts* He will go far.

After all that wildness the rest of the afternoon was fairly calm. Came home, hung out with the kids, did a bit of tidying, talked to my brother. (he had come over to help watch Miss Biscuit)

On a whim, Mr. Jenner and I decided to take the kids out to dinner at the near by pub. It isn't great food but it is a good place to take kids. Everyone with short people goes to eat there so it always sounds like the loony bin. It is one of those welcoming places where you see all manner of familial configurations. (a lot of gay parents, which is cool.) The kids were so well behaved. Senor Onion actually ate a good portion of his dinner. Miss Biscuit was happy to play with a cup and steal food off of her Daddy's plate and it was just a delightful time with everyone. We talked about hypothetical travel plans. We talked about wanting to take the kids to Legoland in Denmark one day. (yeah it might be insane but we are lego nerds.) After seeing an episode of Coast Mr. Jenner mentioned wanting to go to Norway. (we saw a sign on the side of a bus for Icelandic Air advertising flights to Norway) I told him about the village my family came from in Norway and how you can trace people back 1,000 years. I told him about wanting to go to Hammerfest and Svalbard. (where university students have to take guns when they go outside because of polar bears) We blathered about this and that. Senor Onion played happily with trucks and crayons and pointed out things out the window. When we got the bill, Senor Onion said that we weren't done. That we needed pudding. We decided to go on a walk in search of pudding. It was one of those perfect early Fall evenings. The sun hasn't died for the year, everyone was out and about. (kids playing outside, people on walks, going to dinner) We went and picked up some cupcakes to take home. Cupcakes aren't really our first choice of delicious things but it was there and Senor Onion was tickled to pick out one that was little.
So much of our life with little kids is rigid in its scheduling. It makes life a little easier and so on but now and then it is fun to deviate from the schedule and just have some fun.
