first we will make a lot of bread.
Dec. 30th, 2011 02:39 pmFor Christmas, I got a copy of My Calabria. The author lived there until she was in her early teens and then she and her family came to America and settled in Oakland, California. Noteworthy in a way because some of my family came from Calabria (the other bunch came from Sicily. Like everyone else) and eventually my Father's family settled in Oakland. (of course over time they moved to slightly different digs but they still live in the greater bay area.) And as everyone knows, my sister is living in Oakland these days for school. Pretty much this author is someone to relate to. She mentions being embarrassed by her parents going out to cut assorted local weeds that are edible. It seems my Great Uncle and my Grandfather still do this on occasion. Old world stuff but useful when the zombies come. Hang with the peasants for they will keep you alive when Whole Foods goes down in flames.
The book is damn inspiring. There are a million different things I want to try and create. Definitely something to wallow in the coming year. It's wonderful that there are these recipes in here to help keep the culture alive. Now excuse me while I go crazy with the pasta.
