Sometimes it is good to have a sister in law to be sarky with. She has been trying to find a dress that doesn't cost much for the massive wedding we have to go to next weekend. She will just wear something in her closet. She remarked, "Considering the effort the bride made for my wedding... I don't feel like I really need to try all that hard." I snorted. I had forgotten that this bride wore a tracksuit for the evening portion of the wedding. The bride in question is marrying a cousin of Mr. Jenner. Lovely family all around. I suspect the bride is on the shy end of things when I consider all of the evidence, so I cut her slack for not being the most friendly person on the planet. I also recognize that considering some aspects of the family she is marrying into, it can be a little overwhelming at times.
My sister in law and I agreed that we will likely spend much of the ceremony outside with the children. (because most children aren't inspired by the vows of others.) There was a sense of disappointment that there won't be a grave garden to wander through as this is one of those modern evangelical churches. But we are keen on the hog roast. Yes yes lovely that a couple wants to share their love and declarations but seriously... HOG ROAST.
Today was a sunday lunch with Mr. Jenner's family now that various people are back from holiday. My middle brother in law had been in Spain with his girlfriend. He is a dear Uncle because he brought all of the children gifts. The boys ended up with t-shirts with the Spanish flag on them. Senor Onion was floored with joy because he had the SAME shirt as his cousin (who he hero-worships) AND his Uncle. The girls ended up with these white dresses that had embroidery on them. Quite pretty. They all wore them over their clothes.
My in laws came back from Turkey and brought clay bird whistles for the kids. Imagine if you will, tweet tweet tweet!!! AND they brought the kids these Turkish pipes. Senor Onion got a pretty good sound out of that, so we had music through-out dessert. The grown-ups were given piles of Turkish Delight. (which I have eaten quite a bit of while watching Downton Abbey) I brought over three kinds of ice cream/sorbet for everyone to try that I made with my Mother in law's machine. The salted caramel was a major favorite. (especially with the children) Whereas the grownups liked the blackberry citrus sorbet. I think my youngest brother in law wanted the whole container for himself. So I will have to make more of that.
The weather was rather decent today so the kids were taken outside to feed animals, look for eggs, wandering around the fields, and to play on the swings and see-saw. I seem to get better phone reception out in a field with so-so drainage than I do in the house. (thick walls) One part of a field has this marshy path that cuts across at a diagonal. It seems there used to be a well in that field. (along with an old watering trough) But the well was covered up but there is still plenty of presence of water.
Later there was cake and tea and through-out the day there was looking over the paper. Including a story about this millionaire lady who bought a boat and decided to sail it around Land's End at night and then the boat disappeared but there has been no sign of her since. It turns out that she had come to see my in laws about a possible holiday at their place, just prior to her death. She had seemed absolutely crackers to them and said all kinds of awful rude things to them. It seemed apparent that she wasn't quite right in the head. It seems she was known through-out the area for some rather bizarre behavior and then she came to this rather odd end. The slightly tragicomic aspect to the story was a sailor telling her just before she left that she shouldn't sail around the rocks at night because it was dangerous. She told the sailor that she had sailed before and then proceeded to run into the quay a few times before leaving.
Almost like a novel.
