cocoa and cookies
Apr. 10th, 2013 11:48 pmWe were going to go on another day trip today but the weather decided that we weren't. Fine. I messaged my sister in law and said, "hey want to drop off your children at my house so you can do more packing/cleaning?" I go and get dressed/tidy up/faff about and then find a message that says, "dropping them off shortly." My sister in law does not faff about. I never met a more grateful person at my doorstep. Cousin day!!! Everyone played and did their thing. I did chores, and like any good host, I circulated to make sure everyone was enjoying themselves, feeling all right, offering drinks. Tears were kept to a minimum. Miss Biscuit did not haul off and hit one of her cousins like she did last time. There was some serious duplo-making. My nephew who is twelve and can look after himself was a truly good sport about playing with Senor Onion. I owe that kid a cocktail or whatever it is that age group enjoys. "You like steaks? I can get you steaks." (He does like steak come to think of it...)
I fed them lunch, then as the weather wasn't being too evil, they went outside to play while I dealt with the laundry. The thing is with kids is that no matter how many things you bring out for them to play with, there is always a fight over one particular item. Fortunately matters were settled. G. was upset when her sister wouldn't let her have a turn on the trike and then at that very moment Miss Biscuit scratched up her elbow. I had two weeping ladies on my hands, so I picked them both up (now I know how my brother and sister in law feel holding both twins at once) and brought them into the house. I told them, "can you comfort each other for a moment while I get a Band-Aid?" They gave each other hugs. I tended to the scratch, told G. that we will help her figure out how to talk to E. and then everyone was good. Phew. The weather decided to be tragic and windy and so on. Seriously weather, you are harshing our mellow. More playing. Some Charlie & Lola. Some computer time. Everyone let's have some introverted screen time. I made cookies and tidied up a bit. (OMG, toys... everywhere. The kids were in heaven.) Then fed everyone tea and cake and cookies. It was while I was making myself a cup of tea that it began to pour. Right when the laundry was about 75 percent dry. Well fuck it. Into the dryer it goes.
The boys went back to playing with the computer and I read stories to the girls. Granddad showed up to pick up the kids. HAHAHAHAH I HAD MY REVENGE I HAD MY REVENGE. I sent him home with children on a sugar high. I felt such power. It is rare when you can do that to a grandparent. I will mark this occasion every year.
It wasn't a day trip but everyone had a good time. Tomorrow there is a birthday party to drop a kid off at, and who knows what excitement will lay in store for us. Maybe another slice of cake. I definitely need to get eggs and butter. I am nearly out of butter. This always makes me anxious.
