you should hate us for the fun we had.
May. 6th, 2013 11:16 pmDamn. This was like some kind of fantasy of a bank holiday weekend, what with the lovely weather, and embracing every bit of sunshine. My eyeballs almost hurt. In fact they do hurt. (a child of mine, broke my sunglasses and I haven't had a chance to buy a new pair, so too much sun.) I had forgotten what a truly sunny weekend was like.
Yesterday it was lunch at my in laws. Every Jenner in the area was around for lunch. My middle brother in law was about because he was cleaning up his caravan to sell, so his girlfriend and her daughter were around as well. At lunch I learned all about the current problem with ticks, how best to remove them. (my father in law gave me a lesson in using a tick remover and my middle brother in law decided to show off his tick scars. He likes to show off scars.) The kids spent much of the afternoon running around. Playing on the swings and slides, playing in the Summer house, arguing over the toy car that you can ride around in, looking for eggs in the chicken houses, and earning new bruises and scars. There was also an enormous pile of cakes and things at tea time so everyone went home on a slight sugar high. I had a nice chat with my sister in law, and C's girlfriend. The kids were free to roam, though every so often you had to calm the nerves of the youngest girls. Senor Onion and S. (K's daughter) spent time lying on the beach chairs getting a bit of sun and discussing whatever it is six year olds like to talk about. (the economy, the final works of David Foster Wallace, the new Bowie album?) Children were taken home, fed a slight supper and put to bed.
Today we took the kids over to my brother and sister in law's for more playing. They are properly moved into their house, it was a nice day out, and they have this sort of yurt/tee-pee thing up in the garden (which they plan to use for guests and as an outdoor covered play area. The interior has a sofa, chair, and loads of toys. Quite comfy. We sat out in the garden with tea, attempting to get shade from the apple trees. The kids were everywhere. Senor Onion and his cousin E. were playing with cars, playing with some lego stuff, climbing trees, and getting walking sticks from my brother in law. (he was doing some more tidying up of one of their out-buildings) the girls had free reign and at times we would lose them. Mr. Jenner spent some time out in the garden and while he did have the day off, he decided to go in side and do a bit of work. There were cakes, talk about books, trips to Scotland, and the bother about midges. It was rather warm so we went to Nana's to see if it was warm enough to try out the pool. Not exactly screaming hot but Mr. Jenner and I went in with all of the children. Most didn't last very long but hey, it wasn't like swimming in the Atlantic. It was fun to go swimming, look at the bright blue sky and then get dried off to have more tea and cake. I am made of tea and cake. In one of their fields were three sheep that had escaped from a near-by farm. Apparently these three sheep have been on the run since Easter. They showed up a few days ago in my inlaws' fields and everyone tried to get them but they ran off back down into the valley somewhere. They showed up again today. Two of the bastards tried to escape into another field before they were lead back to the former holding area. It's like "The Great Escape" or something. Sheep, I suggest you get in a boat and row to the Allies. Over tea, we talked a lot about the issues with keeping sheep, goats, the desire for miniature goats, the pleasure of owning chickens, and what other poultry we liked and disliked.
I don't think I drank enough water today because I went home with such a headache. We had hot dogs for dinner, and I drank loads of ginger cordial with Tylenol.
The weather is supposed to go to pieces but that is okay. We embraced it while we could. Al fresco dining, bbq, swimming, and loose sheep.
