I baked some brownies and something was off with them. They came out kind of oily/separated/mushier than usual. I have my suspicions about what went down. Chemistry eh? My reaction to this slight failure (and really in the grand scheme of things it wasn't much of a failure as they were still edible, they held together after cooling, and everyone in the house is eating them.) is to try bake and bake until I feel like I have conquered whatever culinary demons I had going on. It always gets a little out of hand but I have plenty of butter, eggs, sugar, and flour on hand. I baked a victoria sponge cake.

Mr. Jenner likes it. My kids aren't as enthusiastic about it. Their tastes in baked goods seems to change by the day. No worries, we'll eat it. I made this one especially moist.
In the continuing baking bender, today I made scones (with jam and clotted cream for tea) and then I made some smug muffins, which proved to be the most popular thing with the kids. I feel a sense of calm now.

Yesterday we had tacos for dinner, and there are leftovers, so we will have taco salad. Taco salad is one of those things from another age that is the least hip thing in the world, but is still so delicious. It was one of my favorite things to eat when I was growing up. My Mom would announce that there would be taco salad and cheers would go around. Yesterday I showed Senor Onion how to make salsa and guacamole. We had gone shopping on Monday for things but hadn't found any salsa worth buying, so we decided to make it. It probably isn't super authentic but we like it. (He claims he likes spicy things.) Senor Onion had a total blast chopping/mixing/mashing things. Maybe I might finally turn him onto soup if I show him how to make gazpacho. (which is kind of like salsa... only more wet.) Hope springs eternal.
