the week that was.
Sep. 12th, 2014 10:41 pmThe first week of school has been put to bed. It went pretty well. Miss Biscuit does come home quite tired, and there are battles in the morning to put on her uniform, but then when she shows up to school she is all smiles and excitement. I even spoke with a couple of her teachers to see how things were going, and she is taking to things like a duck on water. I really have no reason to worry. One of the teaching assistants (who has older kids in the school, and has also worked with Miss Biscuit since she began preschool two years ago and knows her very very well) said that I shouldn't worry. She said of her youngest son, "It took him awhile to get comfortable, and really reception is about getting comfortable with the routine of going to school, and doing a fair amount of social stuff." Excellent.
They were offering the kids stickers if they went in on their own. I had to go into the school to drop something off, but Miss Biscuit became nearly angry with me. "DON'T Go in with me Mum. I can do this." I explained to her teacher, "I'm not going in with her, I promise I am just speaking to the head teacher." Miss Biscuit wants to do things on her own, and she wants to add to her sticker collection, and by GOD, no one is going to get in the way of her getting stickers.
I even got her to have a school dinner today. She said she prefers packed lunch, but this was a good first step. (it helps that it was fish and chips and peas.) Also it is free. Reception to year two get free lunch no matter what their parents' income is, and I HATE having to make lunches. Life is grand for Miss Biscuit as she has her friends, she gets to play, and they even got to go into the nature garden to see the bug hotel.
Senor Onion is a professional about this school stuff. He is easing in fairly well. His teacher even finds him amusing, and she said she hasn't had to say his name once, and he is a very hard worker. Senor Onion had one of his friends over today. His friend is one of the few other kids in the school with dark hair like Senor Onion, so if you look at them from behind, they look like twins. It was a little unnerving at points. "which one is that..." (especially as they were still in their school uniforms, and are built the same way.) Senor Onion is rather keen that they will be studying the Celts, and Cornish myths this term. And they have forest school. This is the year that he gets to learn how to properly build a fire, and use a knife out in the woods. Really this is an excuse to roast marshmallows. This is the kind of education I can support.
I made the head teacher quite happy when I said I would volunteer again this year. There was that desperate, "OH YES PLEASE THANK YOU". It's nice to be appreciated.
As for what I am doing? I am finding ways to occupy myself. Really. Seriously. Laundry and so on. Running. And personal projects. It is just very odd. No babies. No toddlers. No really little kids. Nearly all the mothers in Miss Biscuit's class have babies or are pregnant. (this is ONE fertile place.) I do have a bit of "awww babies" but mostly it is a sense of contentment. The present is good.
