I went to see my friend Meighan tonight in Chekov's The Cherry Orchard.
I was completely engaged by it. For some, Chekov is difficult to sit through and I understand that. It is a lot of talking and often it can appear grave (hey...it is russian) but...this worked well. It balanced the serious...tragic moments with the light and almost..slapstick. Meighan was so good as the maid. She got some of the best laughs...and she appeared so vunerable. Damn, there is nothing better then some good theater sometimes.
Maybe it is my melancholy that is so pulled by people disconnected, and bound for some disappointment. There is a kind of comedy to his work...maybe not comedy, but humour. A man who buys up a property..and loses the people who were so much a part of it. well enough of that. I am off to help a friend get drunk!
