break out the sparklers.
Jul. 1st, 2002 01:08 amwe are approaching the fourth of July. One of my favorite holidays. Because of the grand daring of the people who signed a document, which caused a few to be tortured and hung for "treason" because of a simple request to be treated like Englishmen. equally.
I do believe it taught the English a lesson about how you treat the English people of your colonies. Of course...they did treat the natives horribly..but that is a subject for another day.
here is a few lines from a play I like, "1776"
Franklin: If I'm to hear myself called an Englishman, sir, then I assure you I'd prefer I'd remained asleep
Dickinson:What's so terrible about being called an Englishman? The English don't seem to mind
Frankling: Nor would I, were I given the full rights of an Englishman. But to call me on without those rights is like calling an ox a bull-he's thankful for the honor but he'd much rather have restored what's rightfully his.
Dickinson: Fortunatly, Dr. Franklin, the people of these colonies maintain a higher regard for their mother country.
Frankling: Higher, certainly, then she feels for them. Never was such a valuable possession so stupidly and recklessly managed then this entire continent by the Brithish Crown. Our industry discouraged, our resources pillaged=and, worst of all, our very character stifled. We've spawned a new race here -rougher, simpler, more violent, more enterprising, and less refined. We're a new nationality, Mr. Dickinson-we require a new nation.

Re: For God's sake, John, sit down!
Date: 2002-07-01 10:23 am (UTC)That pretty much killed it for me. When John Adams faxed a copy of the Constitution with a Post-It® on it that said "revision" down to Pennsylvania, that definitely killed it for me.

The only redemption came when Hustler did "Founding Foremothers". That was some good hardcore colonial action.
