Actually.... all sponges use an opal (a type of quartz, eefectively the same stuff as glass) skeleton made of spicules (small needles). Sponges are common all over the globe.

Anyway, the types of sponges which leave behind fully fused, ariculated skeletons are somewhat rarer and the skeletons are rather beautiful.
