I think when you first hear that they are going to have an HIV + muppet on Sesame Street, you begin to picture some purple monster who is named Ramone who is a "dancer".

But this article really brought some terrific insight.

I'm sorry. South America just needs to off itself. That's a nation that just doesn't work.

Reminds me of this classic story from The Onion:

"Sesame Street Gay Muppet"

Naw, I never believed they were gay. Just buddies.

(not that there's anything wrong with being gay...)

my mother had a theory that bert and ernie were slightly retarded people who had their shit together enough to live with one another.

Personally I think it's a good thing. And before you get that look, Genne, I'm serious. And no it's not because I have this utter lust for all the lovely little viruses and bugs... OK, I do thave that, but really I stopped masterbating to the MMWR, so therapy is working. Currently Afria has such a high rate of infection that some estimates are that a third or more of the children currently will be orphaned due to HIV. The rate of infection is phenomenal. Not to make light of infection in the US, but really, we're the rich side of the world and our infection rates are just about nothing by comparison to the rest of the world. I'd have to double check newsletters I receive at work (which I seem to rarely get time to read anymore with my workload) to give hard numbers, but some estimates are that ~55-75% of the HIV infections in the world are in that continent alone, we're talking millions of infections and deaths. No infrastructure to assist, little access to hard core drugs for treatment and little ability to assist those impacted by the loss of family or assist the individuals who are infected.

Anything that can help is a good thing.

Oh well, I'm done... *burns soapbox*

I agree with you whole-heartedly.
I read the article and it made a ton of sense. It is incredibly progressive, and sounds like something that won't be so grim.
It would be like teaching children about washing your hands or other forms of good hygeine.

We were taught to wash our hands?

*stares at his sticky, hair covered and soiled hands* No wonder people flinch when I offer to shake their hand... or cook their food...
