I finally had the privilage to watch "The Royal Tenenbaums" tonight. I am a fan of Wes Anderson's past work (Bottle Rocket and Rushmore) and the man pleased me again, with the right sense of quirkiness, soft sad conversations and general insanity that I like in my characters and men. I notice a theme in Wes Andersons films, delusions of grandeur being taken away and finding ones real self. and capabilities. I love the pereptual state of the weather in the movie. It always seems on the verge of winter, but not quite there and the dilapitated cabs that are always in service. "gypsy cab service" heh.
Everyone seemed to be filled with a bit of regret and longing. In a peculiar way it reminded me of my family. Gene Hackman's character (talk about being snubbed at the oscars) caused a great deal of strife and somehow in the end he was able to mend some of it.
the love between margot and her brother didn't exactly seem sick or twisted, just filled with melancholy. I felt a real kinship to Margot. here is someone who has a lot of feelings, she just keeps them to herself. To be filled with secrets and not quite be known by some...most empathetic.. (Plus I liked her fur coat)
Some terrific under-rated performances and I spotted a number of people who had bit parts in Rushmore, who were in this. Pagoda was Mr. GreenJeans the groundskeeper last time, and Seymour Cassel was the fake doctor in this one and Max's dad in Rushmore.
GOD DAMMIT I LOVE WES ANDERSON.
I also liked the soundtrack, nicco, velvet underground, the clash, and the ramones (plus some charlie brown christmas music) *le sigh*
I like slightly sad music.
BUT NOT EMO! (just thought I would make that clear)

After watching the movie, I felt so quiet. I had to absorb much. I made strawberry jam.

Tenenbaums reminded me a lot of a John Irving novel: eccentric characters, dysfunctional family, incest, physical deformity, quirky satirical jibes at the media, epic span over the characters' lifetime, and even a brief epilogue. I would even say it's the closest thing I've seen to John Irving that wasn't written by or adapted from John Irving. (In fact, it was way closer to Irving than that Disney-fied Cider House Rules movie a couple years ago.)

I mentioned this to a local movie critic and he said it reminded him more of J.D. Salinger's Glass family...(haven't read Salinger in a while though)

i was actually going to comment to gennie that Tennenbaums is a lot like an irving novel. although i'd have to say the hotel new hampshire is the 1st one that comes to mind. i thought cider house was fairly good, although that might be because i saw that horrible simon birch that was supposed to be a prayer for owen meany.

ah well, i did like the royal tennenbaums a ton. great cast. great story. great stuff.

i mean, the casting couldn't have been better.

but i wouldn't be surprised if owen wilson hadn't read some Irving before he penned that script.

the glass family???? sure they were fucked up, but they weren't as entertaining as these people.
okay so I am evil and I think Salinger is over-rated and when I was 16 and I read catcher in the rye, I thought the guy was a big whiny sissy.
*sighs*

Heh heh. Catcher in the Rye is one of my favourite novels. I think Salinger made him a whiny sissy on purpose, because all 17-year-olds are whiny sissies. But what I love is the way Salinger made Holden so alive and convincing and real...whether you like him or not.

I couldn't quite relate. *sighs* I kept thinking, butch it up a little, I can't use some indecisive person.

*shrieks* that comment is going to prompt swarms of locusts, seas to become blood, and storms raining down fire and brimstone, etc.

I love you dearly, but I am bothered by that.
I will still have mad passionate sex with you, but I will still look at you oddly.

I loved the movie and saw it twice in theaters. I found it hilarious and touching....all the performances were fantastic in it and I ran out and bought the soundtrack.....wich is also v. good. I also didn't find the relationship between margo and her brother sick, just sad in away though i believe they worked it out in the end. i want to buy the DVD to have all the fun extras......i too love wes anderson.
