My Mother came over today. She brought me presents. (yay presents!) I made her tea and had her taste the Christmas cake. She loved the cake. I sent her home with a nice big piece of it to share with my brother and sister. Then I made dinner. It was a roasted pork loin with caramelized winter vegetables. It was excellent. There were little potatoes of all different colors, carrots, onion and fennel. I realized I had never really cooked with fennel before. It was sweet and gave a lot of flavor. I loved how the anise-scent lingered in the air.
For dessert I made a chocolate bread and butter pudding.
I sent my Mother home a very full lady.
As for gifts she gave me this book that has vintage reproduction holiday postcards. Some are beautiful, some are disturbing (in a hilarious sort of way) and some are kooky. (because don't we all send cards for Washington's Birthday?) I also ended up with more vintage trims and ribbon to add to my collection, some earrings (thanks to my sister) a vintage copy of a Gourmet menu cookbook from the early sixties and some fancy bath oil. My Mom has a knack for finding interesting and unusual gifts for me. I always look forward to what she finds.
It has been a rather calm day. We watched a movie called The Science of Sleep. I described it like this:
Netflix sent us The Science of Sleep. It was written and directed by Michel Gondry who has directed a couple of Charlie Kaufman's movies. So it kind of gives you an idea of the territory into which you will be venturing. It is a beautiful film and incredibly peculiar and surreal. It took a little bit to figure out what the definite plot was. It was very funny and had this undercurrent of sadness.
Unlike some French films it didn't end up with miserable people having to kill themselves after getting involved in incest and miracle whip because they can't love each other as they should.
Sure it had people who were in love in some way and were miserable. But no miracle whip or suicide.
So definitely a plus. (I never quite recovered from Love Me if you Dare so I have been scared of faintly surreal French films that involve love and people who don't get together in a simple and happy fashion.)
Gael Garcia Bernal is in it and boy howdy is he easy on the eyes. He has cheekbones that could cut through ice. Charlotte Gainsbourg is in it as well and she has a beautiful quality about her.
Tomorrow there is dim-sum in my future.
