My sister accidentally locked herself out of the guestroom this morning. We have eighty-million keys in this house and none of them worked. Thankfully she had left a window slightly open so Mr. Jenner was able to climb a ladder, climb through the window and unlock the door. My sister felt awful. I told her that considering the recent history with people in the Jenner family for locking ourselves out of the house and rooms, she was a step above us. I don't want to mention how many times door knobs have been sawed off. (this is how we are slowly replacing old door knobs.) I taped the lock to the guest room and sometime in the coming week I will make a visit to the hardware store or something and get a new door knob.

The weekend has been fairly calm. I admit to mostly hiding as I am not feeling terribly glamorous or at my best. It is the realization that I have about two months left, there are things that need to be done and no matter what there is no comfortable position to sit or lay in. It makes me grumpy. It makes me extra grumpy when you add warm weather. ANGRY WHALE!!!!
It is Pride, so my sister is off to hang with her friends, see Bears on parade and so on. I am going to stay at home and maybe bake something. [livejournal.com profile] bbcaddict hooked me up with some white lily flour. It isn't sold in these parts and after she and I had read an article or two about the stuff we had discussed getting some. (yay internet for providing things) I plan on making biscuits and stuff. I sent her home with some jam. (a jar of strawberry and chocolate raspberry)

Still working my way through Lipstick Jihad which is incredibly insightful into the current situation in Iran. It explains so much about the recent history and cultural mindset of the population. In some ways the student demonstrations in the late 90s/early 2000 were a kind of warm-up or preamble for what is going on now. I am passing this onto a friend when I am done. It is just so eye-opening. Next month there are a couple of books that are coming out that I really want to read. Plus the pile of books by my bed and the things I get from the library. I suppose this is the best way to keep me out of the bars.

I keep looking about online to see if the author has made any commentary on Iran's recent events, but no luck.

She wrote a piece (http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1903420,00.html) on the eve of the election about one of the important issues plaguing many young Iranian people. Marriage. It was a subject she dealt with while living in Iran as well. Being propositioned by shifty journalists and even clerics regarding "temporary marriage".

There is also this piece (http://www.pri.org/world/middle-east/iran-unrest-online1441.html) from PRI where she talks about what is going on.

I suppose she has to be sort of careful at the moment if she has family there. (she doesn't want them to disappear)

Getting locked out of a room is a horrible feeling.

Oh I know. I have done it more times than I care to count. I hope I made my sister feel better by telling her the stories of our grand idiocy at home for locking people out of the house/rooms/whatever.

That's one of the first books we read in our current book club! I really felt like I learned so much from reading that, although I had a few unresolved things... Ultimately, I figured I learned what I could and planned to keep reading what I could.

I found this:

Which linked me to one article I read recently I really liked about her opinion on the recent vote:

The other Persian book we read about a year later was Persepolis (the full version -- I hear there are two). Have you read that yet? If I can find my copy, you're welcome to borrow it. (I'm a little nervous that I have lost it, because I am looking at my main shelves and it's not jumping out.) I could bring it by next time I'm in your neighborhood which might be next week.

This brings to mind something else -- you have an open invitation to join our book discussions. Although I realize you have a lot on your plate at the moment.

And I still think you should head to the bars with friends and wait and see how long it takes before people give you shit for being a pregnant woman hanging out in a bar.

That's what I wish I did when I was pregnant with Benevolent Dictator.
