Life seems to be about laundry and cooking. Which isn't a bad thing. Though the laundry never ever seems to end. Today I made smug muffins, this really delicious sweet potato spoonbread and some lamb pasties. Mr. Jenner told me he was never really all that fond of pasties until I made them. The secret? cooking the onions before you put them into the filling. And not putting too much pepper in as well. I have more baking to do tomorrow. I didn't quite get to it today as I had two small children to wrangle. While Senor Onion was doing his best to drive be absolutely bonkers at times, we did have fun. I have taught him how to draw a tree! He loves the fact that he can draw something that someone can figure out. He can draw heads (mostly self-portraits) and trees. He got pretty esoteric with his tree drawings. He did one that was yellow with purple fruit and another that was red. He was partly inspired by the book Go Dog Go.
My Mother gave him some fancy-pants square German crayons that he loves to use. So I should thank my Mother for coming up with a clever gift like that. I remember having a set when I was a child. I liked how they came in a tin and kept them in place.

Oh yes... I also made goat cheese today. It was kind of on a whim. Saw some goat's milk at the store and thought, "what the heck let's make some." Because that is how I approach cooking and grocery shopping. Some people are into mindful eating. I am into impulsive eating/cooking. I cooked the milk, added the appropriate ingredients, poured the curds and whey through a cloth, squeezed out more whey and then I put it into a bowl to mold it. I think it will be ready tomorrow. It will just be a soft chevre-like cheese. I liked the flavor.

I used some of the whey for the bread I have onto rise. maybe I will make crostini and spread some of the goat cheese on that. I have some herbs growing in the garden and I could add that to the cheese.

So yes. Lots of cooking and lots of dishes. And drawing. Important to draw those trees.

I think tomorrow I might make some brownies and maybe a cake.

Yes, dishes. Let's not forget the dishes. Over here it's the endless daily laundry/dish/paper tornado.

I love my dishwasher more than I care to admit.

Color me jealous. My dishwashers are the same two appendages I'm using to type this post. At one time I had a dishwasher, but it blew a gasket and died. My kitchen has room for either a dishwasher or a washer, but not both (without a remodel.)

I never had a dishwasher growing up, so it is still a novelty. "Look at that!"
A washer seems more important in that situation.

I still marvel at cell phones. To me they are play Star Trek communicators.

Ok, I have been meaning to ask:
What are a smug muffin, jaffy cake (is that even how you say it?) and crumpet? I am at a loss.

smug muffins is a term I use for these healthful muffins I bake.
Jaffa cakes are biscuits from England.
crumpets are pancake-like savory bready-cake things. They have holes and are kind of spongey.

Crumpets are sort of like space muffins. I love honey and butter on crumpets, but boy, it does get messy!

I realized when I started cooking for myself that many of the things I thought I hated had just never been cooked properly before. Like onions and asparagus and garlic.

Yes.
I was never really fond of onions and then found they are delicious when properly cooked.

Now I will literally sneak spoonfuls of onions out of the pan.
