I have a wedding to go to in May. Yay. Free cake!
So I need to find a dress to wear to this shindig. It is in England (so yeah there will be hats) and my sister inlaw is leaning toward a lot of blue and sweet peas for her wedding colors and all that jazz. There will be the ceremony and then a tea party thingie afterward (cakes, small sandwiches, champagne) and then that evening there is the hog roast and band and drunk people of North Devon and Cornwall. (you know, people who say, mah lovah without irony.) I may just change into something slightly more appropriate for eating pig and spilling beer when it is nighttime. Plus it is next to the ocean -so it gets cold.

I am looking at dresses.
There is this dress which screams, "I am going to a wedding in England. I better wear a hat." It is rather feminine and I kind of dig the print. If you look closely it looks sort of water-colory and there are splatters of paint. Which would be good for hiding crumbs.

This is kind of neat but doesn't wow me. It looks as if it is veering into Lily Pulitzer territory.

This dress looks like something my Mom wore back in the 70s. She will probably comment, "OMG I made that dress." The upside -I wouldn't have to shave my legs. I could just throw a cardigan over it or something.

I dig the serious color of this one. HELLO IT IS BRIGHT. It will definitely say, "Why look there is the uppity American that married into the family.

Hey it is the fifties.

Anyhow these are mostly here to remind me of what to sort of aim for. I know what I want something with some sleeves or straps. I am not interested in hiking up my dress all day long. I need to be able to wrangle children and yet look nice.
I may have to kidnap a friend to go dress shopping.

I ADORE the first and fourth ones.

Yeah. The first one is kind of fun. Not too out there but still has fun detail. Plus I wouldn't have to suck in my stomach.

Ha. I was going to ask if you were from England, but I guess you picked up some of your dialect and phrases from your husband.

I grew up around a lot of anglo-sorts and near the Canadian border so I think it left its influence. Then I married an Englishman and it cemented things.

Four is tempting.

I love the first one and the red one.

And I agree, I always choose a dress with straps so I'm not constantly hiking it up all day. And also because I've reached a point in my life where I can no longer get away with not wearing a proper bra under formal wear.

those seem to be the favorites.

Yeah. I need a bra. Otherwise things are not...good.

I have never had that point in my life. I feel like everyone should always wear a bra of some sort.

I vote for uppity Yank. But that would show off your assets quite nicely. And I like sleeves (just because I have big sausage arms).

The third one scares me. But maxi dresses only make giraffes look good.

I understand sausage arms.
I have a maxi-dress I bought last summer and I was surprised by how good it looked. I think it depends on what is going on with it.

So are you going to wear a hat too? I think we need to bring back the hat. All those dresses are great, except maybe for number 2. I love the long one, it looks so flowy.

Anyway, more hats!

I will definitely wear a hat. I want something slightly over the top.

Fab. I believe very strongly in hats. The wedding I went to last year the first thing I bought was the hat, and then I had to find a dress that went with it.

The wedding the year before there were only two of us in hats in a sizeable gathering but on the plus side they were being worn by me and my best friend (without any planning) so we hung out a lot together and formed the hat brigade :-)

I worry it might clash with the look of things. I will have to try it on and see how it looks overall.

i like the first one and the last one. really think you could rock the heck out of firsty.

Yeah. The firsty seems to be a dress that wouldn't make me feel like a sausage. (the problem with all those damn pencil-skirted dresses that are in right now)

Another fan of 1 and 4 here. Note though that if you had worn 4 at my wedding, you would have blended in with the bridesmaids. Any hint as to the wedding color scheme? Go for 4 if it doesn't involve red!

Ooooh very nice. The bride is doing a lot of blue. (her favorite color) I will have a look at both dresses and see which one looks the best.
Then to think about hats!!!

Oh god, was that bit about blue at the very beginning in there before? You can take comfort in the fact that your journal was the first thing I read this morning. Sorry for being sloppy.

Another idea. I got a bridesmaids dress off of Etsy from a seamstress who goes by myblackdress . She'll do dresses with basically any kind of fabric, and will sew them to fit you beautifully. I think I paid $150 for mine. I think her cuts are pretty classy, but I bet if you started to look you'd find other people on there with good ideas as well...
