Pippi Longstocking is one of the greatest heroines in my mind. But I grew up wishing I was her as a kid.

It is a sign of grown-upness, having plaits!
(Yeah, sorry, at school they'll call them plaits, you're going to have bilingual children soon!).

I wonder why they are called plaits.

Same reason they're called braids - same thing, different origin. Braid is Germanic, plait is from French, they both seem to have turned up in the Middle English period. Braid may have started out meaning hair woven into strands with a ribbon or similar woven through.

(Allow me a chance to open my NSOEDII and I'll take it!)

and in some ways it makes more sense that Americans took to braids, since there is a pretty significant German presence that began to come over in the 19th century. There are so many American traditions, foods, and idioms that come from the German influence.

She's very cute! I can't believe how grown up she looks. Wasn't it just yesterday that you gave birth to her?

I give birth to soap opera children. They are born, go upstairs, come down a three years later and they are a teenager.
