Today we bring you part two of Gennie and Andrew go to the land of no Sales Tax.
also known as "and we drove and drove and drove and it rained a lot"

we woke up, partook of the continental breakfast and watched some television show on the discovery channel that was aimed a kids doing science experiments and then we headed out into the overcast and often rainy world that is Portland. We did what any cool person would do, we went to Powell's. Powell's is like....the Taj Mahal to me. Floors and floors filled with books, used and new. Oh what a holy place that is. I think my idea of total heaven would involve being given some obscene amount of money and being told, "gennie go forth and buy as many fucking books as humanly possible and be merry."
Oh...dreams.
Then we wandered around some more. Looked at things like tourists should, took pictures of other things. We went to the courtyard of the Portland Art Museum and looked at an assortment of statues. Some were modern and Goddess inspired, some were classic and there were even two pieces that were done by Renoir. How hip is that?
We had lunch at this very fun french bistro called Montmartre They have crayons on the table so you can color and draw on the paper table top. Every year they have a colouring contest and the winner has his work framed and displayed in the restaurant. There are some incredibly creative pieces.
I drew a picture of a can-can dancer who probably had an addiction to absinthe or maybe opium. Then I drew a picture of the french writer Collette. I also drew a picture of a lamp, some flowers and then I wrote a short story about a man who found love with a produce girl.
The food was quite lovely. I had a truffle and walnut brie omelette with potatoes and fruit.
Talk about divine decadence.
Andrew had a pastrami sandwich (he had never had one) with fries and it was such a cozy environment.
I eavesdropped on a woman who had on too much perfume and gold jewelry going on at length about people she didn't like.
Then I listened to the couple next to me talk about "gettin' drinkey"
The guy was from Long Island it seems... (it showed)

After that terrific meal, we drove off for the coast. It was raining and damp the whole way there, but we liked it.
We went right to the beach and It was desolate, bare and beautiful.
There were a few people wandering around, some yokels driving on the beach in their jeep and the remains of a bow of a ship.
It sorta made me think of the mad max films. heh
The breakers were immense and we also came across a small puppy who was being so kodak cute it would have made anyone ill.
We took some photographs, wandered to the shore and found a whole sand dollar.
Andrew had never seen the Pacific Ocean or a sand dollar before. Funny the things you are so used to...and it is so neat to be there for someone's experience with something so new.
We then drove off and went to the south jetty where you can see where the mouth of the Columbia river meets the Ocean. It was incredibly windy, beginning to rain and the sun was setting. It was terrific! I loved every moment.
We were cold so we decided to go back to Portland.
We went to a neat restaurant called, Serratto
The servers were quite pretty, the service was quite nice and I enjoyed the antipasto more then I cared for my main course.
For the antipasto we had bruscetta brushed with a lot of garlic and pepper along with sauteed/steamed seafood. Which included mussells, clams, scallops and prawns. Quite lovely.
Andrew had the lasagna which was beautiful to look at and just as lovely to taste.
I had a penne pasta with shrimp, but I found it a bit too spicey for my palate. I am sure that for people who are keen on things like spicey thai food and the like would be quite keen on it.
After that we came back to the hotel and watched television like old people.
yay old people.

So yesterday at work, this flustered woman came up to me, with some books that had similar subjects, "the jilted bride", "wedded bliss not for you" and the like. she said, "um....as you can see by what I bought things aren't good." She looked as if she was either going to cry or kill someone. I told her, an insanity defense is often a good thing. she said, "you know, I may need that"
while fumbling through her purse she found something, "oh look, here is the ring".
It was a classic moment.

Today I went to lunch with my brother, then he came along while I did some errands. He is going home for the weekend and after I dropped him at the ferry I went underwear shopping. A favorite past time for many. It was while I was looking at leopard print panties that I realized that I had lost my small book which I write everything down.
This caused some anxiety, but I paid for the items I chose (a new pink bra and black panties with leopard print trim (classy, no? heh) and found it at Uwajimaia (or however you spell it)
This beautiful girl named Jane was holding it for me. So people if you are ever there, be nice to Jane. Not only is she amazing to look at, she has a great soul. and she deserves some good karma.

Oh yeah, I made some cookies last night. Tomorrow I share the recipe.
and part three of Gennie and Andrew drive some more...

Your post kindof reminds me of Harriet The Spy.. the notebook thing. Anyway I was in Portland with my boys Wednesday/Thursday. Just thought I'd let you know. I still miss you!

yeah *laughs* funny thing is I never read harriet the spy until I was like...19. I relate too much with her.
But losing anything, makes me freak out quite a bit. I tell most people that it doesn't bother me, but it seriously leaves me wigged out. Especially the stuff in that book.

I miss you too. but I don't miss irc. *laughs*

How was Portland for you?

Oregon was ok for us. We stayed at the Marriott. I used Priceline so my room was only $50.00. They upgraded us to the top floor and had a view of the river. The city was way windy and cold! I tried to purchase new (tax free) underwear @ Frank and Meier's but the lady ringing me up took a long time and the total was $80.00 and she wouldn't let me see how she rang it up until after I gave her my credit card.. so I just left. She had a big void to deal with.

That is a terrific deal.
We found an okay deal on a room that we booked that afternoon.

Yeah, when we were there, it was incredibly windy and rainy, but we still had quite a bit of fun.

What a bother I am sorry to hear you didn't get a good deal at F&M's.
