Oh don't be playin'
Jan. 11th, 2004 07:29 amThis chaps my hide.
Can you believe it!?!?! The guy was just searching for a way to go to war.
I find it interesting. Everyone remembers he claimed in a speech when campaigning for President in 2000 that he was against "nation-building" yet if you looked at more of the speech you wouldn't be too surprised by our current situation.
"I don't think that our troops ought to be used for what's called nation-building. I think that our troops ought to be used to fight and win wars. I think our troops ought to be used to help overthrow a dictator... when it's in our best interests."
I am most curious as to what these "best interests" are since I don't have any oil-holdings personally in the Middle East.
As to those who might cite certain Democratic leaders who put in troops in other countries wars and their efforts at nation building (Kennedy in Vietnam, Clinton in the Balkans) I think one should be aware of the fact that even before Kennedy sent troops it was the Eisenhower admin. that was giving support and weapons in Vietnam. Not just to the French but to the other side.
Mr. Jimmy Carter may have had a lousy unemployment situation but he never ever lied to the American people.
And you want to talk about fucking over the economy and the people who make it Mr. Herbert Hoover wouldn't give the bonus to the people who served in World War One early. They were entitled to a bonus(passed in 1924) in 1945 and they needed it in 1932 because of what the depression had done to everyone. What really sparked the interest in gaining their bonus was the passage of the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act. Which was a nasty contributer to the Great Depression. Essentially the act put increases on farm products and gave a bonus to industries (giving more money to the already rich) and because of the Act it angered foreign countries who retaliated with higher tariffs, causing US Trade to decline and to push the US further into economic decline. So the Vets marched demanding what was theirs. Do you know how that president responded? He sent in the Military against unarmed people. The Military and the President was so frightened by the masses exercising their constitutional rights and asking for what was truly theirs that they felt they had to harm hundreds of people.
Yeah...how is that Republicanism for you.

Andrew and I went to lunch with a friend today. We went to Le Pichet and ate happy food. I had a pate sandwich and cornichons. Our friend had the ham and spinach quiche and Andrew had the sardine and bacon sandwich.
I am a big fan of pate and I could eat it for hours. The sandwich was very simple. A baguette with some butter and aoili and a multitude of thick slices of pate. I had it with a simple red wine and felt nice and full.
I had a bite of the quiche and I was very pleased. The ham wasn't overly salty (yes it can happen) and the cheese held everything together and the spinach didn't taste or feel like a sad moist rag.
The sardine and bacon sandwich is always good. It is one of my favorites. Most people wouldn't jump for joy at that kind of sandwich but it has such a nice salty flavor that leaves one in a cheerful state of mind.
After wards we had a carmelized creme tart with a cherry compote.
The cherries gave the dessert a maple flavoring and the intense sweetness complimented the creme tart which was surprisingly lacking in over the top sweetness.
It is the sort of dessert you drink with strong well-made coffee. Lot's of creme!
I also received another belated birthday present.
It was a beautiful lambs wool and angora sweater with some pretty beaded detail on the front. Some might consider it a bit Grandma-ish but I think it would work with my black and white skirt and a snug black top I like to wear.
Very hip!
I told Andrew today that I am the only person that can stretch my birthday out to a month long event. Then I realized only I and the Queen of England are afforded that privilege.
We are two girls with nice busts and not a lot of education who have convinced many people to give us presents.
She and I are "tribe".
....
The only downside to yesterday's movie audience was the girl who was sitting next to me. She kept looking at me...a lot.
It wasn't like I smelled funny or did something weird.
It kind of weirded me out.
Maybe I should have turned to her and said in a fake modest voice, "yes...yes it is me. Would you like an autograph?"
But that might have been going to far.
I would have signed it, With best Wishes, Phyllis Diller
