Oh my goodness. A Very Long Engagement is spectacular. Monsieur Jean-Pierre Jeunet has out-done himself once again. This man had quite a budget to make this film and he used it so well. It was such a beautiful love story and so terribly bittersweet and clever. This man is King of the little detail. Visually it is truly stunning. It is gorgeous, ugly, funny and captures so many elements of existence. So rush your sweet asses to this film. He managed to combine whimsy and an epic saga together in the prettiest package ever.
My feeling is that Jeunet writes fairy-tales for anyone of any age. He is a sort of Hans Christian Anderson of cinema. This particular story is adapted from a novel he read awhile back and took to immediately and has wanted to make into a film for quite awhile. The story is rather simple. A girl (Audrey Tautou)received notice that her fiance (Gaspar Ulliel, probably one of the most adorable looking men ever) has died on the front in World War I. She doesn't believe he is dead and begins an investigation to find out what happened during the war. This is a painful journey for her in many ways. She had polio as a child and now she walks with difficulty. So she begins to piece together a puzzle along with other people trying to figure out what actually happened to various people. There are some amazing cameos, and the story goes off to many different places. Imagine it is like you are trying to piece together a puzzle only you don't know what it looks like exactly. I want to see this film again!
The film just pulls at the heart strings. Sentimental definitely and also very honest. Especially regarding the scenes during the war and what a nasty bit of work and hopelessness World War I was.
Such a beautiful film about ugly things.
