let's go

One of the pleasing things about the internet is how it is such a good place to window-shop in a sense. You can enjoy the fantasy of looking at homes in far off-places, look at books, clothes or films all in the comfort of your pajamas or contemplate a trip somewhere so completely foreign to your current existence. What fun!
Mr. Jenner and I are a couple of old dorky people and one of our favorite shows is this program from England called Coast. The program travels all long the coast (funny enough) of various parts of the British Isles. (The first season focused on going around the entire coast of the U.K.) They talk about interesting historical, scientific and social aspects of an area. It is such a nerdy good time and most of the time after each program we will say, "ooh we should go there." There was one episode in particular we were both keen on. It was about the Outer Hebrides. It is such a remote and fascinating part of the world. It sometimes seems like it is on the edge of the world yet there is all this rich history -some of which can't be entirely explained. And it is mind-blowing at times to think there were people there having a thriving culture in the Bronze age. I liked the stuff about St Kilda -which had its inhabitants evacuated for good in 1930. I was reading about that place recently and how organized religion didn't exactly take until the 19th century. Because they were so far off from everyone they had no idea of so much of the outside world, yet they handled so many things in a civilized manner. They had what amounted to a Parliament where the men would congregate daily and discuss things. People might have a problem with one another but eventually it would be sorted out. And they were incredibly tough people to make a life in a place that didn't provide a ton.
I admit I would love to see the remains of the buildings and fences.

So of course there was a bit of window-shopping. "Oh what if we had a holiday out there in the middle of nowhere." I found this place which is west side of the Isle of North Uist. What is grand is that you can see St Kilda from there. And if we were feeling more posh and wanted to invite more people we could stay here.
So many possibilities.

Since we are going out to the far remote parts of the Olympic Peninsula where it can also feel like the end of the world, I told Mr. Jenner that we should do a theme of holidays over the next few years that could be called, "at the edge of the world". It is easy to experience that when you are on the edge of a remote beach and the waves look like they could take you in an instant. A little frightening but a lot of fun.
