solid food and solid reads

A nice little Labor Day. We went to a friend's for a BBQ. Lovely burgers and clam dip. No one ever makes clam dip any more do they. It is all smug salsa and tofu something. I don't know...what do people eat with their chips these day? But back to the original point, the clam dip was good. There was also this jello salad thing that had cranberries and marshmallows that I liked. That is another thing that doesn't get a lot of love anymore; jello salads. Everyone likes to make fun of them but most people don't realize the long history they have. But then a lot of people are stupid and think good food was invented in the 1970s in California. Hate to say it but you are all wrong. You too Alice Waters. WRONG.
I enjoy locally grown vegetables that are delicately prepared along with beef that was raised on a diet of grass and the works of Charles Lamb but now and then it is good to get down with some jello salad and clam dip. People like to talk in condescending tones about the cuisine of Middle America but there are many delicious things out there.
Forgive the minor ranting.
It is late.
My son did not nap.

Nice day, pleasant weather and more tomatoes are appearing on the plants. Turns out I have a knack for growing tomatoes and pumpkins.

I am working my way through the "Style" issue of The New Yorker. You may want to have a look at that meowlet. Amusing little profile of Marc Jacobs. I also liked the short slide show of photographs by Richard Avedon. Who doesn't love Avedon? I could go on about my crush on him. But I won't. For I am tired.
