a run down
Jan. 2nd, 2009 09:13 pmDid I do anything of significance today? Why yes. I did laundry. Not in my own washing machine and dryer like some fancy person. (there are still tubes and things all over the downstairs area) I had the pleasure of doing my laundry at the laundromat up the hill. It is this long narrow aggressively lavender place that inspires one to feel sick to their stomach. Maybe it is the constant motion of the machines coupled with the poor choice of paint color that does it to a person. Thankfully next door is a nice little place that does the whole breakfast thing. (it seems that is all they do all damn day long.) I had a hot chocolate from them -very swift and nice flavor. I also needed to break a twenty so I could then get change from the change machine. (very complicated stuff you see) Then laundry was done. Though it too for frickin' ever for the jeans to dry. I am spoiled by my dryer at home. I had a book to read while I waited. It was a Persephone book I received for Christmas. It is called Mariana by Monica Dickens. Lovely book that would be appealing to those who have read I Capture the Castle and Lost Art of Keeping Secrets. Vaguely repressed English girl finds her way through the world. I liked Mary because she wasn't absolutely darling and special. In some ways she was a little plain and a little contrary. (lacking silver bells and cockleshells though) She messes up, she isn't a grand beauty and she isn't overtly social. But she has these adventures and meets various men. Some good and some selfish. A good way to spend some time when stuck somewhere.
The water damage guy stopped by to check things. There was a bit of a wet patch on this one spot. Mr. Jenner woke up at three am to make sure the Water heater was not leaking or had died. (we had replaced it earlier in 2008 as the old one had gone tits up -delicate way of saying it died) and it hadn't been cheap to replace it. I spent most of the night either attending to Senor Onion who was hit hard by jet-lag and by the awful thoughts of having to buy another water heater. I think that was also the fate of Mr. Jenner too. Thankfully the wet patch turned out to be the result of a de-humidifier leaking a bit. That was taken care of and we found out that the downstairs carpet is about 90 percent dry. A lot of progress has been made. No need to take the downstairs out to a farm where it can have lots of room to run around and play.
When I wasn't being sickened by poor decorating choices or exhausted by house issues,
rebeccmeister came over for tea. Which is always fun. We see each other about once a year and have nice talks about food, people and whatever. We talked about books, Bill Bryson, bicycles and melting chocolate and the postal service. Essentially having an entire year's worth of conversation without as many pauses. I fed her jaffa cakes and home-made Christmas cake because I am concerned that people may one day leave my house hungry. It isn't really a visit to my home unless you feel vaguely unwell because you stuffed yourself.
I made a sausage and bean stew for dinner which Senor Onion proceeded to spoon into his milk. It is nice to see my efforts aren't wasted.
Now I ought to go to sleep as my eyes hurt and I like the idea of crawling into my soft comfortable bed and putting my ice cold feet on my husband's nice toasty feet. Simple pleasures.
