Maude...let's make fun.
May. 24th, 2009 12:14 pmI am perusing the online edition of my home-town newspaper. Always entertaining. People learning to shoot, meandering letters to the editor, the grim state of education as classes are being cut at the high school because there isn't money. (that whole situation is plain sad) The thing that caught my eye was a quick piece that talks about two national magazines having gushing pieces over the culinary options in Port Townsend. A few years back Sunset magazine claimed that the Landfall restaurant had the best fish & chips on the west coast. Now the locals will say, "oh that is nice" but there is another place that the locals prefer. Out of respect to the locals I keep the name private. The fish&chips there is vastly superior and the last thing they need is someone writing about it and then creating a line for like an hour.
Sunset's current issue describes Port Townsend as "Paris on the Olympic Peninsula" and that the people are going Gourmet.
*snorts*
Well okay then.
Yes there has been a pretty decent culture for some time for locally grown/produced foods and so on, but I suppose it is the same old same old. Some big city publication gets wind that a small town isn't living on a diet of bologna sandwiches and cheetos and they must cover it. (we won't even discuss that provincial paper The New York Times and their amusingly patronizing articles over the years. OMG people in Port Townsend read books and can talk about grown-up stuff.) It is a mixed situation in some respects. An article like that can bring money to the town -which the town always needs. But then you get the tourists who act a little surprised that people aren't running stills out of their sheds and aren't falling at the altar of over the top foodie-ism. But no matter what you will get the precious folk where ever you go.
The other magazine that is wetting their pretty pants over the town is Cooking Light. (cooking light is great, but they don't understand the importance of butter, so I can't relate to them completely) They give a quick run-down of healthy/lovely/light things you can do there.
They mention Sirens bar. My first thought is, "Oh hey that's where my Mom drinks." She is well-known there. But in a good way. They also mention a hotel that was once a bordello. All of the rooms are named after some of the girls who supposedly worked there. Interesting to note that two of the rooms share the same names as my sister and I. Let's think of that as an amusing coincidence.
I have begun to cull and organize in the kitchen. It is going well. Not a ton is going out, but hopefully it will make it easier to manage some of the chaos.
