Yesterday I made saffron bread. The recipe comes from Beard on Bread by James Beard. That man seriously helped to create American cuisine and the modern food writing movement. He was inventive, original and incredibly generous. This is a man who remembered every meal he ever ate. He is also from Oregon. Proof that all the awesomeness comes from the Northwest. Ahem.

Many early culinary memories for me involve seeing his face on books of his that my Mother owned. (she was a pretty prolific bread baker back in the day and won some fierce awards at the county fair.) Beard's large presence is kind of etched on my brain.

Now let's make some bread.
Yes. Let's )

Another day at the races. I had a baby attached to me all day long as she isn't feeling all that well. Nothing serious. It could be teething or it could be the beginning of roseola. So many things. A high-light this afternoon was when she allowed me to set her down and she was standing in the kitchen holding onto the cupboards when she suddenly tossed her cookies all over the floor and on my skirt. She burst into tears and wasn't pleased about the situation. I sympathized. No one likes to be sick all over the place.
Now she sleeps.

Senor Onion helped me set up a trellis in the garden so that the peas and pickling cukes can climb up things. He enjoyed untangling the peas and staking tomato plants. We also planted some other seeds and investigated the strawberry patch for signs of fruit.

As the day had been long I ordered pizza. Sometimes a person gives up by 5pm. But hey I made lemon squares. I made them because I burned the chocolate I was melting to make brownies. Yeah, it was one of those mornings.

Now to climb into bed, read a book about ice cream and hope that Thursday is slightly kinder.
