Today I slow cooked a pork shoulder and we had some delicious pulled pork for dinner. I also baked bread with Senor Onion. His sister was napping and again he said, "let's make something!" Okay then. We used a whole wheat bread recipe from the James Beard Bread Book and it didn't call for any kneading and only one rising. It was a pretty hearty bread but good with the pulled pork. (helps absorb the juices)
This evening I baked some Fern cake. There is something quite nice about slightly warm cake with rich gooey frosting.
When I wasn't in the kitchen, I helped to supervise Senor Onion with his jigsaw puzzles. He obviously enjoys them but when he gets stuck he tends to employ a newly picked up phrase, "I can't do this. I GIVE UP" ARGH. The things kids learn. I repeatedly tell him that sometimes things can be hard but he should keep trying and that it is okay to ask for help. We talk a lot about how to fix something that is holding him back or what might be a good way to figure out a problem. I hope that this will help him as he gets older to not give in when things get hard. BUT he did keep going with his puzzles and got there in the end. I would kindly tell him, "see you didn't give up and look what you did."
I also took the kids on a walk. There was sun and we needed vitamin D. Along the way we ran into one of the neighborhood newfoundland dogs. There are a couple of different people who raise them. Big slobbery lovers. "heeeeeeeeeeyyy I am a dog. Can I drool on you? Pet me? I am a good dog yes I am" *drooooooooooooooool* "SQUIRREL"
We also said hi to the neighborhood horse and took a look at some road work being done. A well-rounded cultural experience for all. Then we had cocoa & marshmallows.

The book I am reading about Italian culture and language has been illuminating when it comes to other Italian stories I have read and certain figures within literature that pop up -like the cricket. One has to almost go back and reread Pinocchio (which was partly a satire of 19th century Italian politics) to understand a whole other layer of subtext.
