with and now
Jun. 11th, 2011 03:39 pmMy sister has been visiting for a few days -which is always lovely. She is on her way back to our Mom's place now.
She helped out with the kids here and there and was a good sport about the insistent adoration from her niece and nephew. She was nice enough to even watch the kids while Mr. Jenner and I went out like grown-ups to dinner. We went up the hill to the Turkish bistro and had a genuinely nice time. We ate our weight in babaganoush, mussels, kofte and other delightful things. (they do good baklava and rice pudding) These rare dinners out are fun. We kind of stuff in a ton of conversation into a short period of time. We talk about future plans, books, stuff we have run across, ideas big and small and everything in between. It isn't like we don't do this at home but there are fewer interruptions. Plus we get to eat delicious food that I don't have to cook. (and no one to tell me, 'this is yucky.')
We came home to find that the kids were still asleep. Huzzah. Maybe the next time my sister is over (and keen to watch the kids) we will go to the movies. A girl can dream.
This morning my sister and I went out by ourselves. I took her to the big ol' Goodwill near my house. I helped her find three pairs of very cute shoes and a belt. I found some books for the kids. But back to the shoes (you know, important stuff) I found her a pair of these fantastic Italian-made heels. They were the color of orange and lemon sherbet and the leather was absolutely buttery. They fit her so well AND OMG it was a blue tag special. I told her she had to buy them. I enable. I also spotted a pair of burgundy flats and a pair of black flats for her. She will be one well-dressed chick at Mills. We then went for coffee at Caffe Vita and enjoyed a quiet moment of beverages. Then we finished off with fun grown-up errands at the drug store. Since she lives much of the year away in California at school, it is plain old fun to have this time together doing not too much. It is a nice evolution of our relationship as sisters. Much of our initial relationship was one where I was a caregiver/authority figure (since I am so much older than her) and as we have gotten older it is more of an equal friendship. Though I suspect I will always be a bit of a bossy big sister. I do try to set aside that side of myself. (though I don't always succeed)
I am now having fantasies of taking a long hot bath in a bit. Reading my book and having no one ask for anything. For at least fifteen minutes.
