Yesterday I went into Bude to run errands and I ended up buying most of Miss Biscuit's birthday presents. (which is just under a month away.) Sometimes things come together rather well. I may look for one more thing. (have to stop at the wooden toy shop in the next couple of weeks.) I was piled up high with bags. There is some satisfaction to be found in a Saturday shop.
Much of the afternoon was spent glued to the Olympics, making nectarine jam, and then a tomato and prosciutto tart. There had been a loose idea about going somewhere but we found ourselves pleasantly occupied with things around the house. I realized today that we have been in the country about a month now. Some things seem simple and easy and other things seem different. So very different. So many details to keep track of in my head.

Friday, the kids and I, met up with my sister inlaw, my mother inlaw, and the cousins, so that we could go swimming. Senor Onion surprised me by going on the giant looping slide at the pool. He went twice with his Auntie, and declared it a ton of fun and giggled the whole way down. A rare brave step. Miss Biscuit continued to be the fearless fish. There are these islands in the pool, and she would climb up onto them and then leap right into the pool. Not a care in the world. Though when she was in the rubber ring and couldn't control her swimming, she would shriek, "I am FLOATING!". She would require that you would guide her toward her intended destination. We grown-ups made plans to meet up at the gnome reserve next week with the kids, for a wander and possibly a picnic. I promise pictures of people in the required funny hats. Yes. The hats.

Today we went over to the inlaws for Sunday lunch. It was to be a BBQ but as you know how these things work, it began to rain. We persevered and had our hot dogs and hamburgers... in doors. We introduced the family to the Seattle tradition of having cream cheese with hotdogs. I don't know if we created any converts but it is good to provide entertainment. The weather calmed down. The kids went out to see the baby ducks (who are half-grown) and to feed the rabbit. Uncle Chris was a good sport about playing with Senor Onion. (they did a lot of imaginary cooking.) Miss Biscuit cuddled with everyone at assorted points. For awhile we were completely captivated by Andy Murray in the finals. It was great sport, even for those who have no interest in it. Senor Onion who despite being a keen fan of the color red, was loudly supporting Andy Murray. He would comment, "I want the blue guy to win and send that red guy home." Miss Biscuit took to chanting, "ANDY ANDY ANDY" with the crowd on tv. Cake and tea were passed about. Murray of course won, and there was much clapping among the Jenners. Our hearts swelled with emotion as Murray stood on the podium and the anthem played. These are the moments when I think I have wandered onto some sort of sitcom set.
Then it was back to the garden to pick courgettes, feed ducks some bread, and collect eggs from the chickens so we could take them home to make a light supper of omelettes.
The kids were good and tired but not so tired that they were uncivilized. It is difficult to time these things.

Our holiday in the Peak district is coming up in a few weeks. Anyone in that area want to meet up at Chatsworth or something for a picnic? Maybe I will bake something for the occasion. Brownies!
