Senor Onion had a good day at school. I think it helped that Mr. Jenner sent a thorough email to the head teacher and class teacher about the state of things, ways we are trying to help Senor Onion, and just a bit about who our kid is at the moment. The teacher said it was very helpful, so she has ideas about how to help him out. She says she was a very strong-willed child, so she understands some of that. I did joke that she would be a worthy opponent.
I was incredibly proud of Senor Onion for how hard he tried today. He kept at it. We talked a lot about the importance of trying and putting in the effort even when it isn't exciting or seems frustrating. He put in the effort today and I gently pointed out that it paid off in small ways. That he had a great day, that he was proud of himself. I think the teacher also gets that when he is overwhelmed, he will do anything to maintain control. (even if he spites himself in the process)
So... the next great lesson in life: How and when to use our strong wills. How playing along can get you more freedom.
He told me that his favorite part of school is free play and lunch. He is in good company, for that is nearly everyone's favorite part. During free play he has become devoted to duplo. He had a school dinner today and he said the mac & cheese was as good as mine. This afternoon they had forest school and he told me that they looked around in the pond for living things, and that they saw the moon out in the day time. And he found a bug that was long but small.
For the time being, I will be checking in with his teacher a great deal, tinkering with our approach, and hoping that he will find his place in time.
On the way home we saw a neighbor had succulent plants for sale. So we bought one. 40p. You see this a lot in our area. People will sell extra vegetables, plants, eggs, on the honor system. I kick myself for not picking up tomatoes yesterday. But this plant will do. Senor Onion and I decided to make it a project to try and keep it alive.
Mr. Jenner is off to some computer geek-out this weekend. It's near Exeter, so not terribly far. But we three will be eating our weight in fish fingers tonight. I will put the kids to bed, and then find some comfort television to watch, and then eat a cadbury bar and try not to think too hard about things.
