easing in

It was a day of doing and creating.
I went to my inlaws for Sunday lunch and my Mother in law cooked up some haggis. Now she doesn't prepare the things from scratch as you can just buy them from the grocery store all done minus the steaming. (makes me think of other traditional dishes that most people just buy from the grocery store.) They aren't even really done in a sheep's stomach. It's plastic. How is that for modern living? She thinks one could get a hold of a sheep's stomach from our butcher and so it sort of tempts me to try one for myself. Mr. Jenner said he found it too peppery but we agree this is a nation-wide problem with certain things but we did enjoy it.
We had mash and neeps and a few other vegetables with it. The children stuck to sausages and mash or veg.
For pudding there was a left-over ice cream bombe that my sister in law had made at Christmas (we had eaten the first one then.) Still delicious. This significant meal left everyone good and full and much of the afternoon was spent in assorted activity. My sister and brother in law skipped lunch (they had to sort out their car and I suspect they couldn't face haggis, which is fair enough.) but they showed up for tea. I worked on finishing two tiny doll dresses for Miss Biscuit's Lottie doll. My Mother in law had some velcro I could use, and she also had a bit of extra trim which proved useful when adding the last touches to both dresses. Kids played with lego, jigsaw puzzles, and had a few rounds of uno.
In the midst of this, was quite the extended conversation about my brother inlaw's whole problem with his car and what he ought to do about it. As I said to Mr. Jenner, "it is amazing how what should be five minute -MAYBE ten minute chat about car troubles could turn into this massive topic of conversation." Jenners are a talented bunch when it comes to this. Of course during lunch, Mr. Jenner's upcoming trips (one a business trip and another up to Bristol to hang with some computer pals) via train came into conversation and somehow we got onto this whole thing about he ought to travel or other ways of doing this despite the fact that the tickets are booked. It has taken me a good long while to learn that this is just chatter. Amusing chatter. A game really. "How can we get there, because there has to be another way."

We had tea, macaroons, and jam tarts, and a good read through the paper. The cover of one of the magazines in the Times was all about how the new/safe diet was fasting. I raised an eyebrow. Gotta phone it in somehow, right? Gah. It was a bright and beautiful day. Absolutely clear and frosty, yet there are signs of life. The light lasts a tiny bit longer, and there are snowdrops and even some early daffodils. The hope that THIS YEAR there will be a Spring and Summer.

There was still a heavy fullness after such a large lunch, so the kids had eggs for dinner, and I think Mr. Jenner will have cheese on toast at some point. I am settling in with cocoa, the first episode of Blandings and the pleasure in knowing that most of the laundry is done. I actually got through some chores this weekend, in between baking, cooking, organizing a few travel-related things, and messing with tiny dollie dresses. I may make the doll a night-gown or something this week.
