We did Easter. The kids woke up to chocolate and eggs, and chocolate eggs. I don't believe they ate a real breakfast. Just chocolate. Senor Onion ate three creme eggs and ended up with a stomach ache but it was worth it, if you asked him.
Eventually I talked them into getting dressed and looking less insane, and we went to see Nana and Grand-dad and assorted cousins. My Mother in law made a really lovely Sunday roast and the lunch time conversation wasn't too uncomfortable. The kids ate real food and that sorted their mood a bit. Nana put together a sort of hunt in the games room, and that quadrupled the amount of loot/chocolate they had. Oh man. So much stuff. Every year we try and say, "hey, just a few small things. They don't need two large eggs, and ALL OF THE FUCKING CHOCOLATE." Some of it is because the kids will never ever finish the chocolate. It sits there just... doing nothing. It isn't like I am one for rationing out chocolate because I am not like that. They are children who can eat as they wish and they don't feel like eating all that much Easter chocolate. I think last year, there was still tons of that stuff by Halloween and it was just gross so I threw it out. This will always be fiddly because you really can't dictate the terms of a gift because that is ill-mannered and one should always be gracious but sometimes it just makes for strained feelings.
The kids were pleased with the sweets. It was a gorgeous day out. Warm and sunny and so the kids played outside in the garden and in the park. Some family friends showed up with kids/grandkids, and another egg hunt was put on. It was a little more calm. Just some tiny chocolate eggs, and some little plastic chicks. Then an egg and spoon race. Oh that British devotion to games and competition. There was time for the kids to run around, play with a kite, and be children. Senor Onion has been feeling run down/under the weather and he wasn't up for playing with everyone. So instead he hung out with his granddad. They chatted about everything while he ate chocolate eggs. Senor Onion likes to ask a million questions, and Granddad likes to answer them. My Father in law wasn't always one for babies/tiny children. He admired them, but I think he is coming into his own, now that the kids are older. He and Miss Biscuit like to look at birds together, and explore nature, and then he can talk A LOT with Senor Onion.

The adults sat around, and there was tea and cake and buns. The children were rather interested in a dead rabbit found near the pool. It was in rather good shape for something likely attacked by a predator. The kids tend to see that sort of death up close every so often, and in that odd way I am glad. It isn't upsetting to them at this point. Just interesting. One more bit of life.
The kids reached that point in the day when everything was grumpy-making. So I took the kids home to do their own thing in peace. The house was so warm when we came in, it was so pleasant to open up doors and the conservatory and let the air in. It was Spring!
