Yesterday I took Miss Biscuit over for a play-date at a friend's house. This was the play-date organized by her friend -aged five. Who handed out invitations without her parents' knowledge. Her parents who are good sports said, "yeah sure everyone come over."
It was lovely. Everyone knows each other, you are immediately handed a cup of tea, and everyone has a good slouch while the girls run around, and the babies feed/nap/throw things.
I was reminded of how much a shift life has taken in three years since moving here.
There I was in an ancient converted chapel, with a couple of massive retrievers sitting on/around me. (they demanded a lot of love.) The conversation was devoted to horses, dogs, doing things to property, assorted country matters, and the children. (no talk about how to get into the right school, or how much you paid for some property.) The children were off on their own because they were just fine. They ran inside and outside, and occasionally asked for a snack. At one point the girls stripped off and jumped into the paddling pool. The dogs wandered in and out, and then there was more tea.
I am queen of the socially anxious but it's nice when you find a few Mums who you feel relaxed with. (especially when your daughters are good friends.) I never ever felt that way around most of the parents when my son was in preschool. It could have just been personality quirks. Many were perfectly nice, but there was always this weird competitive edge that I didn't quite get. Or maybe just didn't want to participate in. It wasn't quite, "is your child a whos-it? Is your child going to whats-it? Well my little Charlemagne can read, and we must get them into this school." But it was definitely wound up.

I drank too much tea, and then dragged home the wet child.
Then it was off to the pub for dinner and drinks. It was a gorgeous day out, so we sat in the garden while the kids played. The view was beautiful as ever and everything was pretty relaxed. Took the kids home and they made loads of noise as they built another fort upstairs. I checked the garden and then watched Tennis. Well fine then. This is the life now.
