A friend is encouraging a group of us to write like mo-fos this month. I seem to be doing it. Writing in some ways doesn't get easier, but making myself do it, is proving to be less painful at times. I am finding ways to fit it in while the kids are home. That is always the tricky part.
I finished writing the first in a series on the history of British cuisine, and the reaction by those who have read it has been positive. I think it might show up somewhere in a few months.
Then a friend encouraged me to write something for a short story contest. I anticipate rejection, but I feel pleased that I could create something. That act of doing is not exactly brave but satisfying when I think of my constant battle with self-doubt.
I have brief moments of, "This isn't bad." But mostly I have internal fights with myself. It's a hobby.

Another birthday party to attend this week. It is kind of a last minute invite. Miss Biscuit was playing with another kid at her cousins' birthday party, and she was telling Mr. Jenner about him later on. She thought he was really nice, and a lot of fun. She has played with this kid a few times at various social gatherings. And he really is a delight. When he arrived at the party he said, "Hello all, I am here!" He is autistic, and he had a really bad experience at his school. The teachers had no clue as to how to work with his particular set of needs, and when he would have outbursts, they were total assholes and would find any excuse to exclude him. He is a wonderful child, and so clever. Eventually his Mother pulled him out, and is homeschooling him. He is doing well, but he does miss the company of other children on a daily basis. But he appears to have made a friend in Miss Biscuit. And he is having a birthday party, and he has asked her to come. So we will. They both like space, stars, and planets, and running around. A good basis for any friendship.

Senor Onion, spent much of the bbq on Sunday with his two oldest cousins, racing back and forth up and down the road on their scooters and skateboards. I realized at one point I really didn't know where he was but I wasn't too bothered. They were safe but having their own adventures and time away from the grown-ups. I remember how much I valued that when I was his age. When I went back to my house to get something, I found them playing in our front garden before they zoomed back. He tried out his cousin E's skateboard and he told me he managed to stay on it and go somewhere. Of course he wants one. I think if he is still keen, maybe it would be something to consider for his birthday. I will ask his uncles for advice since they know about this kind of thing. Skateboards, and books galore. His other love/dream is to build his own computer at some point. He will ask his Dad loads of questions about specs for computers. If he encounters your machine he will ask you millions of things. I bought him a magazine about PCs, and he has read it about five times, and is keen to do chores to work on getting money for his dream computer. (pretty much, he wants some kick-ass machine that would be perfect for gaming.)
