musings when it is warm.
Aug. 20th, 2003 05:41 pmI rarely ever change user pics, but I felt inspired. I dropped a couple more and added some arty pieces. A Gauguin and a La Trec.
When I was twelve, my mother let me skip school for a day and took me to the Paley Exhibit. It was filled with impressionist paintings, post-impressionist, cubism, Post-war abstract. Just everything under the sun. It was there I saw up close for the very first time in person a Gauguin. His paintings of the Polynesian women took my breath away. One saw how free they were.
I also saw Degas which had colors that almost seemed manic.
It was that day I also saw a Jackson Pollack. Equally manic, frenetic and so exciting.
Another interesting moment was viewing a Picasso sketch done on some rough butcher paper. Next to it was the finished product.
There is something slightly religious about standing three inches away from a painting that has no glass to protect it.
You can almost touch the soul.
I always enjoyed the fact that my mother flaunted the authority of schooling and felt it was greatly important to see things we would likely not have seen in the formal educated setting.
She has done the same with my siblings to a greater level. She pulled them out of public school and lets them learn at home. They do much more interesting things now.
It may be a bit unorthadox, but they are probably some of the more relaxed kids I know.
...
I think it is time to listen to a little Dizzy Gillespie and create something.
