Today I took Andrew with me to a rather huge event.
It was my Great Aunt's 90th birthday.
The women in my family live a very long time. I think partly for spite.
My Great Aunt is my late grandmother's older sister. She is a very funny woman with some very definite opinions. Some of which I agree with heartily and some others which have made me choke at the dinner table. But I figure since she is older she can think what she wants.
I always loved her because when I was a child and I would visit my Grandmother (who I also loved very much) my grandma would make me drink milk at every meal. I had to finish the whole glass or I would have to finish it up at the next meal.
I know she wanted to make sure I had strong bones and ate well (she grew up during the depression, that leaves a lasting effect, plus she worked for a dairy firm) but oh my lord. I got so sick of it. Sometimes we would go over to Auntie Ferns and she would immediately offer cookies AND soda.
Let's just say it is always fun over at Auntie Fern's house. She gives you tons of lovely things to eat. She tells you hilarious family gossip, and she always tells me I should cut my hair to shock it into growing. (she was a hair dresser for many many many years. She started out during the depression. She said the best paying customers were the prostitutes)
It was a fun party.
Jello salad, pickles, salmon, noodle salad, cake made by my mother's cousin Mary (she owns a bakery) and someone serving stiff drinks.
AMEN.
Someone got fairly drunk early on and was rather loud. My mother was made to play the piano and we all agreed that we were glad that Uncle Marty didn't show up. (he is my mother's brother and no one in the family has ever liked him. He is a real twit)
What a success.
Also the extended family likes Andrew. One of my mother's cousins leaned in and said, "he is really cute, you did well. Now hold onto him"
Ah family...
THEN, because one party isn't enough for us.
We went to one of Andrew's co-workers homes for a barbecue.
YAY FOOD.
Lot's of things to eat and croquet to play. Plus there were cute dogs to play with and children chasing after eachother with a broom.
We came home tired little bunnies.
Isn't Labor Day a real fun time?
Tomorrow Bumbershoot. I am going to see REM.
Envy me.
