Here is an idea that I want to throw out to the Great American Public.
Let's have a little dignity tomorrow and not make it a huge deal.
Let those who lost someone, mourn in private.
Let's turn off the ALan Jackson songs.
Let's stop waving the flag.
Let's just take a deep breath and carry on with life.

And Mr. Bush. just don't.

If I didn't have any hope I would have lost it years ago and bought a ronco food dehydrator or voted for Ross Perot or something.

Yeah...Alan Jackson.
I am sure he is nice, but that whole super american patriot jingoism really chaps my hide.

Yeah, but you know it won't be like that. I totally agree with your post, but I have zero faith in the general American public and media.

That's why I did my grocery and beer shopping today so I can stay inside all day with my music on very loud all day.

Oh, and the next person who says "freedom fries" or "liberty cabbage" around me? Neckpunch.

I like your approach.

Let's stop waving the flag.

umm no, lets not stop waving the flag, regardless of the occasion.
There is nothing dysfunctional about having
pride in our nation.

I want people to stop using it as a jingoistic form of patriotrism where there is not true meaning other then some bland marketing strategy to cover the true problems.

Waving a flag won't help the person who lost their spouse in the towers.

Let's just have a day where we reflect quietly.
Give everyone a moment to breathe.

most sacrificial thing one can, saving a life, and our country recognizes that, respects that and therefore waves the flag in their honor.

I realize that doesn't offer any real consolation to the wives/husbands of those who lost. But I wouldn't put it past me that their families have even greater respect for them especially seeing the support they've received from their country.

I agree, but I don't agree in using the flag as a vague form of patriotism that holds no true meaning and is bastardized in the name of political rhetoric and used as a message to support war, but not peace.

Mind you I think the founding fathers would have a lot to say about the actions of many of their fellow countrymen.

"There is nothing dysfunctional about having

I agree completely.

However you're missing her point. I don't think she's attacking true pride or whatever at all. What she's talking about is the overkill and bastardizing of events such as this that the media and many others do.

It's disgusting and also, much like any oversaturation, has the complete opposite effect of it's intent in that it loses it's punch. The more you hear stuff over and over, the less effect it has.

I liken it to the "Boy who cried Wolf" syndrome.

I agree that the use of patriotism as a form of jingoism must stop. We must have pride in our nation and support those that are doing their work and making sacrifices (firemen, Dr.s, etc.) but lets get past the comercialization of what happend and move on to living our lives.
