Email is down, my allergies are up and we are nearly out of yogurt.
To quote a song, "Something's gotta give".
Another day ahead of me. Maybe this time left-handed alien robots who like to wear clodhoppers will grace me with their presence.

Date: 2003-10-02 02:19 pm (UTC)my favorite is forklesday
Date: 2003-10-02 08:30 am (UTC)it is, of course, a grown ups day. if a kid is caught out of bed on forklesday, they are forced to take a bath for the entire day.
it tends to make one pruney.
so, i avoided it at all costs.

Date: 2003-10-02 05:01 pm (UTC)I used to sit in the bath as a child until I looked like a prune.
I still do, but it doesn't wear well.

Date: 2003-10-02 05:16 pm (UTC)I grew up there so I have a very...different attitude.
It is a beautiful place, most people don't last the winter, it is difficult to get decent employment. It helps to know someone if you want to get a job.
People often show up in the spring/summer/early fall and fall inlove with the place. Which is understandable. Then winter strikes.
It will be cold, dark and the sun will never come back.
Sometimes the wind gets so bad the ferries and the bridges shut down so you are essentially stuck there in isolation.
The nightlife is limited. If you like drinking then there is something to do.
Everyone has slept with everyone so don't be surprised if nine hundred other people have gone with your girlfriend/boyfriend.
Everyone argues, there are various committees and groups and it takes years for anything to be accomplished.
When the Indians were driven out of the place they laid a curse on the place that nothing would ever be done and everyone would argue.
Mind you, Port Townsend was where the various tribes would drop off their sick, and insane members of the tribes.
Which should give you an idea of the karma that is going on in that place.
Port Townsend is where people come to get divorced.
People arrive happily married with their family and in about ten years that marriage is gone.
Expect artistic pretension. I reccomend making friends with the true natives. They know what is what and they are more likely to be able to find you a job.
The art is hackish and boring.
The food is great in Port Townsend, Don's has the best milkshakes. Tyler street has the best coffee. If you want damn fine pasta go to Lanza's. For a good beer and little crap go to the Uptown pub (they also have food food)
It is too bad Alderich's burned down. They had a good meat market.
Your social life in the winter will be the grocery store, the movies and the bars.
Dress warm.
There is an element known as a "shedboy". They are men who live on property in trailers. They can build stuff and fix stuff, but not worth having a relationship with if you want some growth.
The Leader (the local paper) is known as the loser or the misleader.
The letters to the Editor is my favorite part, because it is one on-going argument with everyone.
Everyone is broke, join in the fun.
Don't tell anyone "how they do things in my old town."
That won't win you friends.
Okay enough of that negative stuff.
I lay that on people to see if they can hack it.
I loved growing up there. It was beautiful. I liked knowing everyone, (despite their pretentious artsy ways at times) I liked feeling safe. When I was seven and my brother was three we could walk to the Aldrich's by ourselves and my mother didn't have to worry about us being kidnapped or hurt. People watched out for us.
There are many lovely places to go walking. It is a good place to be a misanthrope and work on your novel.
Just don't have a big head, don't be patronizing, be polite and keep yourself and you should survive.
Yes it is always windy.
You know the French say that the warm winds (which we often get) are the kinds of winds that make people go crazy.
I am inclined to agree.

Date: 2003-10-02 05:25 pm (UTC)Beautiful...when it snows yes.
But in Februrary it will be dreary and nasty and you will think of becoming a snowbird (those lucky bastards who take off to New Mexico from Jan. to Mar.)
Spend a month or two there. Have some fun.
Then take off somewhere else.
Try Whidbey...or Vashon.
