Last Saturday I felt it was neccessary to remove Mr. Jenner from the computer. If he has his own way, he would sit infront of the screen all weekend with minor breaks for the bathroom and cheese sandwiches. While that is a fun way to spend time, it isn't entirely healthy. The man does not need a monitor tan.
So I told him we are going to go to the Market. He seemed up for that. We looked at stuff. We walked through crowds of people with large bouquets of dried flowers that are put together by Vietnamese immigrants. (Mang mountain people many who were once refugees) We looked at the pretty displays of fruits and vegetables and then we went to "Piroshki Piroshki" (located in the market and pioneer square) and had these apple cinnamon rolls. I am fond of them because they are not overly sweet, they are filled with large thick slices of apples and the dough is so light and perfect. They also make great marzipan rolls and Borscht. Not everyone is a fan of Borscht, but I ate quite a bit of it growing up. So I hold a fondness for the beet soup with a large dollup of sour cream. I suspect my mother sometimes secretly wishes she could be Russian. She likes tragic comedy, borscht and revolution. She also makes damn fine piroshkies.
Anyways...back to Russian desserts and Saturdays. We looked at greeting cards, dairy products, kitchen wares and we went to a bookshop I have taken a liking to. They have rather nice deals on many used books (That is where I acquired the second Griffin and Sabine book) Eventually we escaped. As we were leaving we passed Bottega Italiana which is quite new and looked quite warm.
The soft pretty colors of the desserts drew me in, along with the advert for fresh hot chocolate. We never made it to the hot chocolate. Instead we tried a couple of flavors of gelato and took them home. I picked Pineapple and Nutella. The pineapple captures the perfect sweetness of pineapple and one kind of feels as if they are eating the fruit...iced. It is kind of difficult to explain, but imagine if you had put a pineapple in the freezer, took it out and spooned out the meat of the fruit. It has that pure of a flavor.
The nutella was out of this world. Silky is the right word to describe it. You can clearly taste the hazelnut, but at the same time you have the strong soft milk chocolate flavor.
The lady who served us gave us some instructions regarding our gelato. It needs to be in the freezer within about twenty minutes of purchase. It only lasts about three days and the fruit gelatos need about five minutes at room temp. to be the correct consistancy.
Andrew made a joke about the "feeding and care" of the gelato.
I do believe I need to go back and try some of their cookies and hot chocolate.

Last night I made some chicken pot pie which is perfect during cold clear weather. Of course I think anytime between September and March is perfect for hot dishes of any sort.
(hotdish is a very minnesota term)
Tonight? I have no clue. I may have to go to the grocery store and find inspiration. I adore grocery stores and could probably spend my life wandering around in them...wait I already do.

Hah, sounds exactly like a weekend Joe and I would have [and have had]--even down to visiting Piroshki Piroshki--based on the same reasoning. Some of my favorite times have been spent just walking around the market with Joe on a Sunday afternoon.

We must be in-tune, I have had an intense craving for chicken pot pie lately.

Oh, the fact that we get up early on a Saturday, go have McDonald's breakfast [only thing better would be Denny's], hit up some estate sales before we head to the craft supply store and come home to work on projects together, opting to stay in for the evening and make dinner... Yeah, I'd say we're pretty damn old. And oddly enough, I am a-ok with that.

I'm not feeling very ambitious in the pie making department, so I will have to seek out places that serve up cpp goodness. Any suggestions on where to find some?

We find ourselves falling asleep early sometimes, and then waking up early and having tea and toast while watching Katie Couric. Oh my lord it cracks me up sometimes.

Next thing we will find ourselves going for walks in the mall.


Hrm...It depends. I don't really ever buy pie. *has to think about this for awhile*

Hehe, priceless. I can picture you two doing that.

As for the mall, it'll still be a cold day in hell before I want to tackle that one. I can't stand being there when I need to be, can't imagine voluntarily going.

I'm thinking of looking into Chutney's, since I know they claim to have "Seattle's Best Chicken". [Which cracks me up because that sign was from Capon's, which Chutney's replaced, yet they left it there.]

Ok that's just scary because Dustin and I also sometimes wake up early on Sat. to hit McDonalds for breakfast. This past week we have also been playing Yahtzee while making our wedding favors and watching Trading Spaces. Yes, we are really, truly, officially old people now. It's kind of nice in a way!

you know gen I think you are right about mom secretly wanting to be russian you know the whole it's dark we're all going to die, Revolution all of it, it's kind of funny but I also have sympathy for her too, ah, well That sounded like you two had a fun day but I think you are right it's not healthy for a man to spend his weekend at the computer and getting a moniter tan, now that I think about it, that is just sad.
