eat up silly.
Nov. 18th, 2003 05:05 pmWhat a day...
Everyone looked damp today. It is dark. The sun is never coming back.
With that being said, I do believe it is a chicken pot pie kind of night!
Okay so I was going to discuss the whole marshmallows on yams/sweet potato distaster that some people insist upon participating in.
I would like to know where the hell that kind of thing comes from?
Now in the Midwest there is a tradition of getting kind of crazy with hot dishes and casseroles. Some of which I enjoy in a great way. After all it was in Minnesota that Rice Krispies were in invented. So I am not opposed to marshmallows in all things. Just some things which show a huge amount of bad taste.
I was mighty curious as to where this insane practice began. So I did a bit of research (oh thank goodness for google sometimes)
It seems this particular thing came from the south. Now we should hold back our remarks because many fine things have come from the American South.
Have you ever had really damn fine Fried Green Tomatoes? Because I think everyone ought to try some. Especially with some gravy. Good Lord it will set you right with the world.
Anyways back to sweet potatoes...it turns out no one is entirely sure how it came out. (according to Atlantic Monthly) All that is known is some woman with bad taste began a trend and now we have people doing perfectly awful things to sweet potatoes.
Now I tend to keep it simple.
I will peel some sweet potatoes and cut them up into small pieces and place them in a pan. I will dot the pan with pieces of butter, sprinkle some cinnamon on top (maybe a dash of salt and pepper) and then drizzle a bit of brown sugar or maple syrup on top. I will bake that for about 35-45 minutes at 350F. It turns out so nicely.
Another recipe (popular in Kentucky it seems) involves placing brown sugar and pecans on top. I am keen on trying that one this year.
The big thing is to keep it simple. After all you are going to be eating a million other things that day. No point in going crazy.

Hey, want my freaking sun? I hate the SF winters. The sun seems to think it's summer here, all winter long. Not enough cloud cover dammit!! lol.

Yeah, it's a Southern thing all right. I could have told you that. My dad's side of the family hails from the deep South, so we always have sweet potatoes with marshmallows every Thanksgiving and Christmas. My grandma makes it. I like it. I grew up eating everything from grits to okra to collard greens. I like some of it (grits, okra [when breaded and fried], and the sweet potatoes) and dislike others (the 'greens).
It's all a matter of personal taste.

That sounds delicious. Now I'm hungry.

Date: 2003-11-19 10:20 am (UTC)I dig a lot of southern soul food mind you. I just can't get behind the marshmallow on the sweet potato thing.
I do believe it is my stoic Scandanavian side coming through.
