I was listening to Jeremy Vine on BBC radio 2 and they were chatting about all the horrible things of the days (how kids are terrors who need curfews and regular beatings because they wear hoodies, the tragedy of finding out your daughter is a prostitute, what happens when kids go and vote conservative) and they broke in with the news about the explosions in London (which thankfully were minor and consisted of idiots showing a half-assed attempt at scaring the masses) and quickly after giving the first reports Jeremy Vine says, "well..then...now that we heard that..um.. let's listen to some Beatles."

Is this the equivalent of hearing some bad news like your entire entire farm is infected with Hoof and Mouth or someone breaking a bone and someone saying, "let's have some tea."

[livejournal.com profile] cogshiftingman Damn you for posting the so duko puzzle. I wasted time doing that damn thing but I solved it. So I retract some of the damning.

The other day when I was digging about in the garden and attempting to transplant a rose bush I had a better look at the soil. Oh it is another tragedy. Only a few inches below the crap soil is what looks to be slightly clay-ish soil. No wonder our drainage is shit. Does one just give up on having a lawn? Should I just build raised beds and buy half-way decent soil so I can have a half-way decent garden? I may discuss this with my Mother is a bit of expert on these things. *looks sternly at the soil* The cosmos on the other hand are thriving beautifully and seems to be enjoying itself. The spinach has gone out of control. I need to take care of that.

The long-term solution is to dig up the whole thing and mix in sand or peat or something that will break up the clay. But that is a big job and requires heavy equipment. If you just want a nice home for your rose bush, you can do this on a small scale -- dig a big hole, mix it with sand/peat, and put it back.

The bigger issue is the fact that the lawn is half clover and days after it rains the ground is squishy and then when it finally dries the ground is rocky and hard.

I suspect we may rip everything up and re-do everything.

I have clay, and you need not dispair.

It is squishy then rocky and hard because there is no root system. Clover has a weak root system.

A couple things you can do.. till and seed, overseed, topsoil and seed.

Clay is not evil. My garden about the pond is all clay and it is doing well. And I have some good sections of grass now that I took out some big trees and it gets sun. Sun is the key to good grass. And staying on that Scotts maintenance schedule.
