Contractors are kind of like disappointing boyfriends who promise all kinds of things but fail to deliver. I am not saying all contractors are like this but this is just the general impression I have had over the years.
Our contractor had to cancel and is now scheduled to fix the tub sometime today. I mostly feel bad for our tile setter because he can't finish this job until the contractor does his job. I am sure the tile setter can fit in other jobs in the mean time but still, I feel bad about wasting his time. Here is to hoping the contractor doesn't re-schedule. Again. I am sort of willing to put up with it because he well-respected by other people in that general house repair/remodel industry.
I am also a masochist.
And yes there will be before and after pictures when this thing gets done. Hopefully this decade.

But let's think about happier things. I am making apple butter. The apples have been cooking down for awhile. I hope it turns out well. The last batch of apple butter I attempted (despite following the directions) came out like applesauce. So sweetened spice applesauce it is. It is like apple pie filling. So I think I can use it as a topping on ice cream or maybe as a filling in a pastry.

Right now I am reading Underfoot in Show Business by Helen Hanff. (She wrote 84, Charing Cross Road) It is about New York theater, her attempts at getting a play produced, being a poor artist in mid-century New York. And there are all of these fabulous legendary show business stories. From what became of certain people who were nobodies once upon a time to a truly fantastic story about a musical that was doomed to fail because it had all the odds stacked against it and it became one of the greatest hits on broadway. ever. and really changed how Musicals were done.
Yeah.
I picked up this little book for 50 cents at the library sale. I think I got a pretty sweet deal.
It is a short little book but it is just filled with such kind wit and you get the feeling that despite the up-hill battle she faced, she really had a good time. I love books like this.

I made a terrific beef stew last night. It was partly filled with a number of left-overs and things that needed to be used up but Mr. Jenner proclaimed it one of the best I ever made. Senor Onion enjoyed it alot too. His favorite part was the carrots. It started out in a familiar territory of carrots, a few potatoes, an onion and then I added some golden beets and then for fun I added a cut up pattypan squash. And I used the leftover (slightly congealed) gravy to make a new gravy that I finished with a bit of butter. Combined with some barley, leftover beef from the previous night and some quickly made dumplings (using up some parsley that has gotten out of control in the garden) it made for a very filling meal. It was also rather pretty with the variety of color.
Now to come up with something for tonight. There is still a bit of leftover beef so maybe I will make brown stew. And maybe some parsleyed potatoes. I have these little german butterball potatoes that I have fallen in love with and they would be just perfect for that.
It is kind of a rut to do beef three nights in a row but I want to waste anything. Maybe tomorrow or Sunday we will do fish to even ourselves out.
I hope you enjoyed this episode of Gennie thinking out loud.

The title of this post is like saying, "Don't think of an elephant."

That book sounds like a great read- will definitely put on my list.

I made a throw-together-stuff-that-needs-to-be-used-up potato soup last night and also got rave reviews. Maybe I should throw together stuff more often . . .

What is brown stew? I am soup illiterate.

A friend gave me the recipe (http://queenthesixth.livejournal.com/52409.html). It is very much, "what do you have on hand" cooking. Which I like at the end of the week.

My dear Mr. Bartram is always having to wait for someone to finish their job before he can finish his, which means we're always waiting for MONEY! Sometimes he even does a job and then sheetrockers will sheetrock over it! Then he has to come back and cut through the sheetrock! They've sheetrocked right over electrical outlets and light switches. What is wrong with them!??!

I am also reading a $0.50 library sale book. Mine is called A Map of the World by Jane Hamilton. I highly recommend it, even though the subject matter is absolutely fucking awful.

Not a lot of great communication goes on I am guessing.
What is the book about?

I love beef stew. That sounds delicious. Actually, I love stew of any kind. I am not much a fan of soup.

Didn't Mr Jenner do acting at one time?

I want to seriously know what else you can use apple butter for. (no, not dirty stuff!) can you eat it on toast or in a sandwich?

Yes.
I use it on toast and on a sandwich with peanut butter.

I read Hanff's Apple of My Eye shortly after my first "adult" trip to NYC. Fantastic.

whenever i do apple butter, i just keep simmering for seemingly ever. trick is remembering that it will thicken more when cooling. crockpots are good for this. the stupid small no temp. control 'dip' pot that came as a 'bonus' actually is pretty decent for this purpose.

i enjoyed the thinking out loud :) nice to know i'm not the only one who does that ;)
