We have colds. It is great to share things as a family. We will get over it. Plenty of garlic for all.

Yesterday I met up with a friend for coffee and hilarious conversation. Then my Mother and a friend and my brother came over for dinner. I admit I felt like death warmed over the entire time but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves so it was all right.

..

I have been with my husband for a number of years and despite both being English-speaking people; occasionally we still find ourselves educating each other about how to pronounce various words from our respective cultures. It is a cheap form of entertainment. "what did you just say? No you say it like this..." (the first time I went to England with him there were quite a few words he explained to me.) Tonight it was the word coyote. Obviously he wouldn't be entirely familiar with them because they don't exist in the UK and he didn't grow up with a fair amount of native american lore which seemed to be common when I was going to school. Though living in the northwest much of the Native lore I heard had to do with salmon, raven, (a trickster character much like coyote) eagle, whale and bear. I had picked up some picture book at the library for Senor Onion that was about some southwestern native story. The illustrations are pretty dandy.
But hey Mr. Jenner grew up with King Arthur and what not so hopefully the kids will have a varied experience to folk stories. Holy Grail and Pecos Bill!

Anyhow... it seems Nigella has another book coming out. (something to add to the wish list)

How did he pronounce coyote? :) Too cute.

Do you personally say "KY-yote" or "ky-YO-tee"?

I wonder if he pronounces it the way Australians do, which is kye-otee. But perhaps not, since I know there are still heaps of words that English people pronounce that make Australians look at them and say WTF was that word just there?

Or, more specifically, this is what I did to my friend when she said the word 'courier' at work one day, then said the word 'couriering.' I was like, that is another language dude - what are you trying to say to me?

Come on, you can't leave it like that, how do you say 'coyote' properly then?!

Is it KY-oaty? That's how I imagine Wile E. Coyote's name, anyway.

Interestingly enough I would say "coy-oatey", but "wile e kie-oatey". I think this may be an English accent thing.

OMG Pecos Bill! I have not thought of that in years. I always appreciated Robin Hood. I bet the kids have a rich and varied selection of literature.

I remember one of my LJ friends from the UK wanting to know what a Daddy Longlegs is. She thought it was a mayfly.

In the UK a daddly longlegs can refer to the crane fly (insect), or to the harvestman (arachnid).
