Someone on my friends list brought up the nature of how small town newspapers used to work, in that they would announce various comings and goings of the population. "Mrs. So and So just returned from a visit to thisplace visting thesefolks."
It reminded me of a story my Mother told about a road trip she went on as a kid with her family. One of the places they went to was my Grandma's hometown in Southern Minnesota. It is a teeny tiny town. My Grandma and her family left in the late twenties when the farm was gone. (they came out to Seattle in a Model T.) It was the first time my Grandma had been back since she left. (this was the early sixties I believe) Her visit, and the assorted family and friends she was meeting up with, were mentioned in the local paper. This made my Grandpa freak out a bit. He was born/raised in San Francisco, so the idea of someone tracking your every move in the media was a new experience. The paper mentioned everything. From who the family had dinner with one night to where they were going next.

In fact not too long ago, I was looking up something about that side of the family and I found a newspaper clipping that mentioned my Grandma's relations returning from a visit to someone. It is also a bit like how my hometown paper used to be. There were certain sections devoted to certain areas of the greater county (my hometown is the county seat) and people would report such news. There's a lady from my home town parish that would send her son the local paper back when he was the navy. (this was like thirty/forty years ago) and the guys on the ship took a real love to the news from Shine because it was of another time, and the woman who wrote that section had assorted opinions about her Mother in law.

Like my LJ friend said, a sort of proto-FB. When you grow up in a small town, everyone knows what is up with you and where you've been; including the folks who work at the grocery store. I laugh a bit, because I may live several thousand miles away and yet there are plenty of people in my home town who know (sometimes it's second-hand information) what I am up to. There is a warming side to the reality that these people watched me grow up and still care.
